During my time in school, I can remember countless times I stayed hungry. I attended a boarding school where breakfast was served by 6:45 am, lunch by 2:00 pm, and dinner by 6:46 pm. If you miss the dining time, you should better have something in your cupboard to eat because the school shop is mostly not an option.
We will sometimes refuse to go to the dining hall to collect our meal because we don’t like a certain type of food they have prepared, even when we have nothing in the hostel to eat. We had trained ourselves to withstand hunger.
The higher institution was a different case entirely; unlike the boarding school, one could prepare whatever they so desire to eat, or walk up to any shop to buy anything, but it was similar to the boarding school in some ways because, just like the boarding school where we get broke and out of provisions and money, it was the same with the higher institution.
My broke periods usually come during the exam period; around the time we start exams, I usually become very broke. This started in my first semester in school, which I can remember vividly to date.
I was living in the hostel, sharing a room with about thirty other occupants. I would cook and invite everyone in the room to join me for a meal. I remember bringing out the pot and placing it in the middle of the room, and everyone would join me to eat. We were living in a communal setting where everyone shared what they had with one another, until we stopped.
My foodstuffs had finished; I had no money either. This was when I understood that I could only survive the communal relationship because I had my food of my own and I barely cared about anything.
It was almost time for exams, and I had nothing to eat. I would wake up some days and only get a spoon or two of food to eat, and would stay like that till nightfall. When it was night, I would lie on my bed and sleep.
It was in this period that I understood that people are only there for you when they know that you can be there for them. So, the next semester, I took my food stuff somewhere else where I could cook and eat with my closest friend.
