It has been proven over time that one of the most important aspects of human existence is the existence of rules and laws to govern it. People have proven over time that they can't be left unattended. While laws and rules are for the benefit as well as the safety of the people, it has also been used as a means of extortion as well as enslaving the less powerful. The elites of the society do as they please and will sometimes act above the law.
Rules and laws are what keep a society in place and can also be seen as a chain that restricts people from their excesses. The essence of rules and laws is to create order, protect, and prevent chaos, which brought about the need for government and the power it possesses. But even this power can be corrupted; individuals in power bend these laws and rules to their taste and benefit, leaving ordinary people vulnerable.
The existence of kings in the early times was for humans to have a leader who would lead them and sometimes go to battles to conquer other territories; a king was a figure of authority as well as respect to his entire community.
The king protected and led his people to war, ensured food security and was a symbol of unity, but many ruled with absolute authority, exploiting the people they were meant to serve for wealth or labour; it would seem as though the king was not only serving as a guide but also as an oppressor of his people, which was the challenge of absolute power of the king.
Power corrupts even the purest of hearts, which makes it difficult to find a leader who leads purely for their common good; there is always self-interest in the leader's actions. Leaders look out for themselves at all times, forgetting that they are there to serve the people and not themselves.
The attempt to solve the problem mentioned above was the introduction of the democratic system of government, where there is a system of checks and balances on the power of the government, balancing authority rather than creating a situation of absolute power; but even with this attempt, the issue persists in different forms.
Veto power has its advantages as well as its disadvantages. When the right person is in power, where the person has no interest whatsoever to enrich himself but to make the society or government he met better, the veto power could help fight against wrong decisions made by the other arms of government.
But in the case where the veto power is used for selfish and stupid reasons, then there is a serious problem at hand, although the veto power can be overruled by a majority vote.
In a real sense, a person should not be given veto power; imagine giving veto power to the likes of Adolf Hitler, giving the power to overturn decisions and standing rules; the power will be too much for the person, causing the person to become power-drunk.
