Blue is the fourth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. The album was released on June 22, 1971 by Reprise Records. All songs on the album were written and produced by Joni Mitchell. Additionally, it was recorded at The Jim Henson Company Lot (formerly A&M) Studios in Hollywood, California in 1971. The album explores various facets of relationships, from love to insecurity.
The album was both a commercial success and received praise from critics. In Canada, Blue peaked at number 9 on the Canadian RPM Albums Chart. Additionally, in the United Kingdom, the album peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart and was certified double platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for sales of over 600,000 copies in the United Kingdom. The album peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 chart in the US. It was also certified platinum with sales of over one million copies. In January 2000, The New York Times selected Blue as one of 25 albums representing "turning points and pinnacles in 20th-century popular music". It was also ranked 24th in the third edition of Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums. In July 2017, Blue was named the greatest album of all time made by a woman by National Public Radio (NPR).
