Daydream is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey. The album was released by Columbia Records on September 26, 1995. The album was produced by Mariah Carey, Walter Afanasieff, Dave Hall, Jermaine Dupri, Manuel Seal and David Morales. Daydream is Mariah Carey's follow-up to the albums Music Box (1993) and Merry Christmas (1994). Mariah Carey turned to more hip hop and urban music on her Daydream album. Additionally, Mariah Carey considered this album to be the beginning of her musical and vocal transition.
Daydream was a huge success worldwide, selling over 20 million copies, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time. Additionally, Daydream is Mariah Carey's second best-selling album after Music Box (1993). Daydream received critical acclaim, with critics praising the album's production, sound quality, and Mariah Carey's musical progression. It also became Mariah Carey's best-reviewed album and garnered six nominations, including Album of the Year, at the 38th Grammy Awards. Additionally, it was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's List of 200 Definitive Albums. Daydream was certified Diamond by The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), making it Mariah Carey's second album to receive a Diamond certification.
