Supernatural is the eighteenth studio album by American rock band Santana, released on June 15, 1999 by Arista Records. The album was produced by Carlos Santana, Clive Davis, Jerry 'Wonder' Duplessis, The Dust Brothers, Alex González, Charles Goodan, Lauryn Hill, Art Hodge, Wyclef Jean, Fher Olvera, K.C. Porter, Dante Ross, Matt Serletic and Stephen Harris. Additionally, the album features collaborations with many contemporary guest artists such as Rob Thomas, Eric Clapton, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Dave Matthews, Lauryn Hill, Maná and CeeLo Green.
The Supernatural album was a huge commercial success worldwide, and the album also sparked renewed interest in Santana's music. It reached No. 1 in eleven countries, including the United States for 12 non-consecutive weeks, where it is certified 15× platinum. The song "Smooth" was a number one success worldwide and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 12 weeks. The song "Maria Maria", was number one in the US for 10 weeks.
Supernatural sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and was Santana's best-selling album to date. Additionally, the album became the best-selling album by a Hispanic artist in music history and one of the best-selling albums of all time. Supernatural is currently the 26th best-selling album worldwide.
Supernatural won nine Grammy Awards at the 2000 Grammy Awards, breaking the record held by Michael Jackson's Thriller's record for the most honored album. Awards included Album of the Year, making Carlos Santana the first Hispanic to win it, and Best Rock Album. Additionally, Santana won eight of the awards, tying Jackson's record for most awards in one night. Santana also won three Latin Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year. According to Guinness World Records in 2005, it became the band's first album to peak at number one on the Billboard 200 since 1971's Santana III, marking the longest gap between two number-one albums at 28 years in total. I can say that my favorite song from the Supernatural album is Smooth. I think the pairing of Rob Thomas and Santana made the song even more perfect. It is the song of my childhood and it is surprising that it is as impressive as when I first heard it, it is a truly great work. It's one of those songs that will never get old for me.
