Tracy Chapman's album has great songs like "Talkin' 'bout a Revolution", "Behind The Wall", and "For My Lover", my favorite songs on the album are "Baby Can I Hold You" and "Fast Car".
To evaluate the Tracy Chapman album in general, at a time when pop was highly polished and very popular, Tracy Chapman blew into a new breath to the music landscape with this album. Tracy Chapman is a natural storyteller with great insight into what is happening socially around her and has created beautiful and meaningful music with lyrics that connect to the humanity within almost all of us.
Tracy Chapman - Baby Can I Hold You
"Baby Can I Hold You" is a melancholic folk-pop ballad that creatively tackles the common issue of lack of communication in relationships. The song's lyrics evoke a sense of loneliness and longing as the protagonist desires a moment of connection and companionship. Simple but majestic chord progressions turn into a great song with Tracy Chapman's amazing soulful vocal performance.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Sorry
Is all that you can't say
Years gone by and still
Words don't come easily
Like sorry, like sorry
[Verse 2]
Forgive me
Is all that you can't say
Years gone by and still
Words don't come easily
Like forgive me, forgive me
[Chorus]
But you can say baby
Baby can I hold you tonight
Maybe if I told you the right words
At the right time
You'd be mine
[Verse 3]
I love you
Is all that you can't say
Years gone by and still
Words don't come easily
Like I love you, I love you
[Chorus]
But you can say baby
Baby can I hold you tonight
Maybe if I told you the right words
At the right time, you'd be mine
[Outro]
Baby can I hold you tonight
Maybe if I told you the right words
At the right time, you'd be mine
You'd be mine
You'd be mine

Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
"Fast Car" is Tracy Chapman's best song and arguably her signature track. The lyrics revolve around themes of poverty and the desire for a better life, and her message of hope and resilience has endured for 35 years. It has become a classic song and has been covered by many artists from different genres, but I think Tracy Chapman delivers it best.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Starting from zero, got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothing to prove
[Verse 2]
You got a fast car
I got a plan to get us outta here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just across the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs
Finally see what it means to be living
[Verse 3]
See, my old man's got a problem
He lives with a bottle, that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
When mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said, "Somebody's gotta take care of him"
So I quit school and that's what I did
[Refrain]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
We gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Verse 4]
You got a fast car
We go cruising, entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
And I work in a market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
And we'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs
[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Verse 5]
You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinkin' late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together, you and me'd find it
I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving
[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Refrain]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so you can fly away?
You gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
