Whitney Houston is the debut studio album by American singer Whitney Houston, released on February 14, 1985 by Arista Records. The album was produced by Jermaine Jackson, Kashif, Michael Masser, and Narada Michael Walden. After seeing Whitney Houston perform at a New York City nightclub, Clive Davis believed the singer had the potential to crossover and become a big superstar and signed her in 1983 and together, the two began working on her debut album.
Although the album did not sell many copies when it was first released, it became more popular in mid-1985 and became a major commercial success. It topped the Billboard 200 for 14 weeks in 1986, also generating three number-one singles, "Saving All My Love for You", "How Will I Know" and "Greatest Love of All" on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, it is both the first debut album and the first album by a solo female artist to produce three number-one singles.
Whitney Houston topped the album charts in many countries, including Canada, Australia, Sweden and Norway, also peaked at number 2 in the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Germany. The album was certified Diamond for shipments of 10 million units or more on March 16, 1999, and was later certified 14x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on January 27, 2023. Additionally, Whitney Houston has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. It is currently considered the 40th best-selling album worldwide.
At the 28th Grammy Awards in 1986, Whitney Houston received four nominations, including Album of the Year, and won Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, for "Saving All My Love for You". Additionally, the album earned one nomination for Record of the Year for "Greatest Love of All" at the 29th Grammy Awards in 1987. The album ranked in all three editions of Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
The album was re-released as Whitney Houston, The Deluxe Anniversary Edition on January 26, 2010, in honor of its 25th anniversary. As an expanded edition featuring five bonus tracks, including the a cappella version of "How Will I Know", that original 12-inch remixes, a booklet on the history of the original album, and a DVD of live performances and interviews by Whitney Houston and Clive Davis. Additionally, on June 30, 2020, following its 35th anniversary celebration, the album was re-issued as a double vinyl, including the singles from Whitney Dancin' Special. They also released a box set containing the 40-page hard cover photo and lyric book.

Whitney Houston has a truly powerful and fascinating voice, I have always loved her vocal performance. There are great songs in the Whitney Houston album, frankly it is very difficult to choose just one and say this is my favorite, but I can say that the ones I listened to the most were "How Will I Know" and "The Greatest Love of All".
Whitney Houston - How Will I Know
"How Will I Know" was one of the pop hits I listened to the most on the radio. The video for the song is also amazing and captures every bit of the joy of the song and looks like it was a pretty fun shoot. Booming drums, sax solo and all, it's as bright and appealing as the neon colors splashed around the video set. It's truly a great work and I think it's one of the most fun pop songs. While listening to this song, I both have fun and can't sit still. Thank you Whitney Houston.
Whitney Houston - Greatest Love Of All
I get goosebumps every time I listen to "Greatest Love Of All", it truly is a timeless classic and a great piece of art. Youthful and soulful, this song features Whitney Houston at her sweetest. Whitney Houston's signature hit is an expression of tremendous self-belief in the face of great adversity, and lives on in her oeuvre as a bright, shining reminder that we must find love from within instead of depending on someone else to fulfill our happiness. Thank you Whitney Houston for gifting us with these wonderful works, these songs will never get old.
