Health problems are increasing around the world, especially after the pandemic, and complex health problems with psychosocial, behavioral and biological origins seem to be increasing even more. That's why many health organizations, especially the World Health Organization (WHO), are carrying out various studies on how to solve or reduce these problems.

WHO and the Jameel Arts & Health Lab announced the upcoming Lancet Global Series on the health benefits of the arts. The 2019 WHO report was published in 2019, presented evidence of the role of art in improving health and well-being, and the new series of research builds on this report. The report identified the contribution the arts can make in promoting health and health equity, preventing disease and treating acute and chronic conditions across the life-course. These activities can range from dance programs for people with Parkinson's Disease to music therapy for pain management and drama therapy to support social-emotional development.

WHO and the Jameel Arts & Health Lab Lancet Global Series on the health benefits of art will be based on a new conceptual framework for the important role of art in supporting health. Also, It will focus on non-communicable diseases, which are the leading cause of death and disability worldwide and will also raise awareness of the existing evidence base and provide recommendations to improve global policy guidance on issues such as scaling up promising interventions through social prescribing and cross-sectoral collaboration between the arts, health, education and social care sectors.

Jameel Arts & Health Lab Launch Trailer

The Jameel Arts & Health Lab – Lancet global series was announced at a special WHO75 Wellbeing Concert held at Carnegie Hall on September 20, 2023. Additionally, it featured performances by multiple Grammy award-winning Mezzo-Soprano Joyce DiDonato and Metropolitan Opera pianist Howard Watkins were featured. The concert was followed by a meeting of over 50 researchers from universities around to start the series, which is anticipated to be published in late 2024. Following the concert, more than 50 researchers from universities around the world came together to start the series, which is expected to be published in late 2024. You can follow the research series here.

It will be a really interesting series of research and I look forward to seeing the full results published. It is already known that art, especially music, has many health benefits, and I love seeing this type of scientific research because doctors and healthcare professionals reference this type of research. Who knows, maybe in a few years doctors will recommend listening to music instead of taking medicine to treat some diseases. Frankly, I believe that music can heal or help heal certain diseases such as neurological and psychological.

Question of the Day : Do you believe that art can benefit health? So why?
