There are things we made ourselves believe for years but as time went by we began to realize that they were actually not true. We often familiarize ourselves with some common sayings and stand on it just because we hear other people saying the same thing. But the truth is that some of them are in contradiction with reality.

One of the common lies some people tell themselves is that good things come to those who wait. It can also be likened to the saying “the patient dog eats the fastest bone.” I honestly wonder who came up with that particular phrase. The idea that life owes you anything simply because you wait is laughable. Life will only give you what you demand for and walk towards to get.

Sure, you can be permitted to wait when it is not yet forthcoming. It is you have not taken any action at all and hoping for your wishes to fall on your laps then you ought to stop wishing because that is most likely never to happen. Some people keep waiting all their life without doing anything not because they are patient but because they are afraid and would rather avoid the risks involved. The fear of failure frightens them.

But the thing is that the most successful people are those who fail the most. Failure does not scare them, rather it motivates them. Here’s the irony of life: Winners fail more than losers. It’s the result that actually determines whether a person is a loser or a winner. No one was there during the whole process; the trial and error. Even if someone fails about 99 times like Thomas Edison we cannot conclude the person’s status—whether loser or winner—until the final outcome is revealed.

Successful people refuse to accept whatever life serves them. They know what they want and they go and get it. It’s losers who accept whatever life offers them. Good things never come by accident. Even though it seems to have done so, it was definitely gotten from someone who acted, which later on came along your way.

Another deception is the idea that Great people finish last. There is a difference between kindness and weakness. The problem with that statement is that it has a way of making people less expressive of themselves. Always letting people have their way before yours doesn’t translate to kindness. I was a bit caught up in this web at some point in my life. There are some cases I found myself between my needs and the needs of others and I was like, “hmm…mine can wait.” I can do that like five to ten consecutive times on different occasions even if it meant denying myself of my own desires.

Until I learned that one of the things that defines strength is your ability to say one of the easiest words at certain times; which is NO. Sometimes, let it be your own thoughts and opinions that are at the forefront.

The last thing that can be misleading is the idea of being yourself. Now this may sound controversial. I believe what the statement means originally is not to be a pretender, which I totally agree with. But the problem is that some people have translated the statement to something else to make themselves settle for average, or worse, less.

The truth about being yourself is that some people may not really know they capabilities or potential until they stretch themselves. Let’s take for instance a person that is timid. There’s a limit to what the person can do because such person if functioning based off of the mindset that he is timid. After all, that’s who he is. He may reject certain roles or positions and he actually justifies his actions because to him he is being himself. Even if he does manage to accept the role, but views himself as a shy guy, it’s definitely going to affect him when executing certain tasks, especially the ones that have to do with meeting and familiarising himself with new people.

I strongly believe that we can be whatever we want to be. Just because you are shy or a bit limited in your capabilities in certain areas does not mean that you cannot improve. Like I said earlier, you may not truly know potential until you stretch yourself. This may lead to revealing a different version of yourself, and a better one at that. Maintaining this mindset gives you a sense of understanding that you can be a lot better than your present self.
