In the part of the world I am in we experience two seasons which are dominant; they are the raining season and the Harmattan or dry season. But somewhere in between we also experience periods where there is extreme heat. Now this season is the one I find the most unbearable.
Currently in my country, we are experiencing the El-Nino season which started around September and is likely to continue until the February next year. It was predicted that a rough estimate of 31,800 people are likely to die because of the intense heat that accompanies this harsh weather. And from the experience I have had these past weeks I have no doubt that this prediction could be right if care is not taken.
Weathers where there is extreme heat is the worst for me. It doesn’t just make one sweat profusely but it can also darken one’s complexion. The only thing about this kind of weather that I find favourable in a way is that when I wash and hang my clothes the rate at which they dry is fast. Apart from that, nothing else interests me.
I am the type of person that likes to go on walk towards the evenings for the purpose of clearing my head and stretching my legs. But during seasons like this, I am restricted from carrying out those walks because by the time I return home I would be already looking like someone than ran a hundred metres race.
During weathers like this, one tends to drink water too often because it makes the body system to get easily dehydrated. The negative effects are just so much to mention, and the state of my country in particular does not even help matters. In a country where constant power supply is a challenge it can be really difficult coping with that kind of weather. Having a pleasant sleep at night can be a serious challenge because of the level of heat. Even when you have a cold bath at night before going to bed it’s just a matter of time before the heat returns.
To be able to cope with this kind of weather I think it would require one to be very much stable financially. Someone who can leave the generator on throughout when there is power outage so that the fans or AC can blow in the house. Someone who has a swimming pool somewhere in the house where they can deep themselves into and keep their body temperature cool. Someone who is mobile and can leave the AC in the car on throughout the journey, not like us that have to wait under the sun for long before getting a bus or a cab that we’d have to squeeze ourselves into with other passengers thereby generating more heat and nearly suffocating.
I think for me the cold weather is the best. Once you get yourself your sweater/jacket, a cup of hot tea, a plate of steaming hot food, you’ll be fine. Most times it’s going out that attracts the cold. But when you are indoors with the door and windows shut, you are less likely to feel cold. But during heat, you are hot whether inside or outside your house, that’s one terrible thing about it.
