Misericordia — mercy.

It is a beautiful example of how Ecclesiastical Latin carries theological meaning in a single word.

From misericors:
miser — wretched, afflicted
cor, cordis — heart

literally, one whose heart is moved by another's misery.

And so misericordia is not merely pity. It is compassion that moves the heart toward the one who suffers.

Misericordias Domini in aeternum cantabo.
“I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever.”

— Psalm 88(89):2
