This blog is a personal journal of all the movies, Tv-Shows, & Games I consume during a year which enhances my overall experience. The ratings that I give are fully based on my personal preference and enjoyment at the time of watching and I'm writing spoiler-free reviews.

My Anime History

Image from thread

Until a Week ago, I had not yet watched a single Anime series but I kind of had a hunch that it would be something that I really would be into if I did. The first time I came in contact with something Anime Related was the Video Game 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors which I read a positive review on that really sparked my interest. It turned out to be something that really blow me away even though the game experience at time was quite frustrating and in the first playtrough I got an ending which didn't really explain anything after which it took me years to play it again. Eventually I ended up watching most of it on a Youtube Walkthrough afterward also starting to play the 2nd game but the time requirement and at times frustrating gameplay while I mainly just wanted the story didn't get me far. This said, the first game and story really blew me away and ever since I wanted to watch an actual anime series which I never really got to. I did watch most of the Studio Ghibli Movies and some others which I all enjoyed but they didn't give the same intellectual kick that the nonary games (999) did.

Choosing My First Anime Series

One of the advantages of being active on Hive is that you have communities where specific content can be found easily and one of them is The Anime Realm (@theanimerealm) which I subsribed to and checked / curated regularly trying to find a good recommendation as first Anime Series to watch.

The post that sold me on what to watch first came from @zero-not who from the looks of it by now gave up on hive unfortunately. Image from thread

It included Death Note as the first recommendation and his description instantly sold me as something that I might really enjoy.

So I managed to download the English Spoken Version and eventually started watching it last week (It's also available on Netflix).

Death Note (2006-2007) 8.9/10

Apparently this is a series from 2006 which has a total of 37 Episodes of 23 Minutes each which adds up to a quite lenghty runtime of 12 Hours when skipping the intro and outro of each episode. I did watch it on my laptop oftentimes in bed before going to sleep which anime perfectly suits.

Plot Summary (Spoiler Free):

So there are the Gods Of Death who are called the shinigami who each own a note book where the people who's name are written inside of it end up dying of a hearth attack 40 seconds after it was written down. This notebook somehow lands on Earth and a 17-Year-Old Student (Light Yagame) picks it up reading all the rules of the note book that were written in it and eventually trying it out to see it actually works. He gets the grand idea to make the world a better place and goes on a missing to kill all the criminals in the world. As in the next day 50 prisoners end up dying of a hearth attack, the police and interpol started to investigate what was going in.

As they had no clue, they brought in a mysterious investigator by the name of L (who also is a 17-Year-old Student) after which things turn out cat and mouse game between light Yagame and L who both are extremely intelligent individuals with great deductive reasoning.

It only really took me 2 episodes to get totally hooked as this series has everything that I tend to enjoy as a more rational thinker. The main premise of the show where there is a Death Note with all kinds of different rules attached to it just stayed interesting for the entire 37 episodes with a moral question who you actually want to root for. https://images.hive.blog/DQmU2BCqWVv437cgi5zrCQBVtnWyv2zW7si7QoUU5XWsahk/image.png

I seriously wondered at the start how they could keep it interesting and fresh for the entire 12-Hour Runtime but they actually managed to do this often keeping me wondering and surprised by the next direction that was taken. The story takes place over multiple years and there are new characters and plotines introduced regularly. All the episodes I would say were good and retained a constant high level (maybe aside from a couple in the middle) and the ending was also ok and came at the right time as it also didn't need to drag on for much longer.

What I loved About Death Note

I kind of have a things for media that both speaks to the kid in me and the adult (Like Doctor Who / Studio Ghibli) and Death note perfectly did that. The story was written so well and smart that it kept me guessing what the 2 main characters were thinking and how they were going to get themselves out of tricky situations which always was done in a very clever way. There are also no subjects like depression, addiction, adultery, sexn difficult relationships, trauma,.. which kept it fun an enjoyable to watch. It's a finished story so I'm now able to fully move on after it controlled my life for about half a week as I had an urge to binge watch at times. I also just love logic and this series perfectly scratched that itch. So overall, for me it was a perfect entry as a first anime series to watch even though the bar now is set quite high.

Conclusion

If you want to start watching Anime and are someone who loves logic and somewhere has an inner kid in you, Death Note probaly will be the perfect Anime to watch if you plan to start. I really really enjoyed my watchtime a lot and was kind of blown away by it and the level it kept all 37 episodes. By the end though it was really time for things to get wrapped up also because I just wanted to move on with my life. I rate this one a very Solid 8.9/10 and give a big thanks to @zero-not and the Anime Real Community for the recommendation. This was the first of probably many Anime Series that I will be watching in the coming years!
