January is coming to an end. Hope everyone is having a great start to the week. This post will be for the battle mage secrets. The theme featured this week is Briar Patch. In this ruleset, all units get thorns. Thorns basically reflects back Melee damage. The damage is half of the attackers damage unless there's amplify then you add another +1 damage.

The obvious strategy for Briar Patch is to avoid playing melee units. However, with the release of the skill reflection shield in the second set of chaos legion reward cards this has all changed. There are melee units with reflection shield which help protect against the thorn damage. Sometimes these units are amazing to place in the team formation because it will catch the opponent off guard. Melee units that I like to use with reflection shield is tide bider and runi.
For summoners, you want to pick something that can affect ranged or magic units. There's a higher probably of these units being played so picking Quix, Immortalis, Thaddius would be good to counter against the non-melee units. Even Kelya is ok since it gives armor and Kelya has great magic and ranged units for this ruleset. To be honest, Keyla has great units for almost every ruleset.
Some teams I like to play in this ruleset have to do with Immortalis with Mycelic Infantry infront and the taunt in the back with support and dps in between. Another lineup that can be played here is Kelya/Quix with Baakjira, and backline like merdhampir dr blight, angelic mandarin.

The battle link can be found here. This battle was on my scholar. I actually had this battle today so it was perfect to use as an example for this ruleset. It was a 54 mana battle with armored up, melee mayhem and briar patch as the ruleset. Only the earth and dragon element were banned so everything else was free game.

Summoner , Jacek - I chose Jack to have the piercing to ignore the armor. It's also super good for the speed to ensure I can go first.
First Position, Arkemis the Bear - This was my frontline tank. It gave armor to my whole team and it's just the best tank in modern in the game right now for mid-high mana battles.
Second Position, Ferexian Hero - Ferexian Hero is a unit with reflection shield. I mentioned that this is a good strategy to use since opponents usually don't expect melee units in a briar patch ruleset.
Third Position, Runi - Runi was another surprise reflection shield unit. It's one of the best cards for this ruleset if you want to use a melee unit.
Fourth Position, Djinn Inferni - This unit goes great with Jacek. With some luck on the rng, it could instakill one of the units on enemy backline.
Fifth Position, Supply Runner - This main purpose for this unit was to give my team speed and to do some dps.
Sixth Position, Countess Sinash - This unit was to also give extra speed to the team. Sinash and supply runner are usually the standard double speed buff cards to use with Jacek.

If you watched the battle, it was kind of close. Runi came in clutch because with the true aim it helped to clear the enemy coeurl lurker. It also helped finish off some of the units in the backline that got low from the scattershot from my magic and ranged units. The huge speed buffs made my Arkemis the Bear super fast once the enrage got activated. This really carried me in the fight. You can also see how strong reflection shield is in this ruleset because it also blocked the blast damage from the opponent sinash as well.

Personally, I like to play Briar Patch. I like it because I have an advantage with my runi. There's not that many runis out there and I feel a lot of people are using it on land now so there isn't much being used in ranked play which gives me an edge.

If you made it here, thank you so much for reading all the way to the end. I appreciate the support and I hope you learned something new! What's your take on Briar Patch?
