Yesterday, I faced a very complicated and challenging experience while working on ATM support. While working at an ATM booth of Dutch-Bangla Bank, I noticed that the machine was having a problem with its network connection. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the LAN port of the motherboard was suddenly dropping the internet connection. Such a fault in a 24/7 service like an ATM machine causes major disruption. So without further delay, considering the situation, I quickly decided to replace the motherboard completely.
After removing the old faulty motherboard, I went to replace it with another motherboard I had with me. But after installing the new motherboard, I ran into a new problem. After testing, I realized that there was a problem with the processor of the new board I had, due to which the motherboard was not booting or running. Such problems make the job even more difficult in sensitive hardware like an ATM machine.
Time is short, but it is important to get the machine up and running quickly. In this situation, I made an immediate and intelligent decision. I carefully removed the defective processor from the new motherboard. Then I carefully removed the good processor from the old motherboard with the damaged LAN port. Paying close attention to the protection of the fine pins or lands under the processor, I brought the old processor and inserted it into the new motherboard with thermal paste and did a perfect processor swap.
This was the most complicated and sensitive part of the entire process. Because a little carelessness could damage the processor or the socket of the motherboard. After successfully installing the processor, I set the motherboard in the ATM chassis with the cooling fan and other cable connections. Finally, after powering on the machine, I breathed a sigh of relief the motherboard booted perfectly and the network connection through the LAN port was also stable.
After configuring everything properly, I put the ATM machine live and made a few test transactions to ensure that the machine was now fully operational and safe. It was a truly complex and exciting task to bring a dead machine back to life by instantly identifying the problem with two different motherboards on-site, swapping their parts, and seeing the successful transaction screen at the end of the day was a different joy.
