Today was quite a challenging and somewhat boring day at work. While working on a particular machine, I had to face quite a lot of delays and interruptions. Normally, routine tasks should be easy, but today was the complete opposite.
The main problem started when I noticed that the Dutch-Bangla Bank ATM machine was completely out of service. Although the screen showed a message to collect money, the machine was not coming live with the main server due to the network. So, to find out the reason why the machine was not coming live, I started checking all the connections and hardware devices around it thoroughly.
At one point in my investigation, I looked at the Juniper router and switch board in the network cabinet. The real problem came to me while checking the connection of the device's LAN ports. Although several cables were connected, an important network Ethernet cable was hanging in the open. Then, on closer inspection, I found that the LAN cable of one of the combo ports was completely disconnected. Basically, this small loose connection or incorrect port configuration had stopped the data flow of the entire system and brought the machine down.
After identifying the problem, I very carefully re-inserted the cable into the correct port and made sure that the port indicator lights on the Juniper device were flashing normally. As soon as data exchange started on the network line, the ATM machine regained its normal functionality. After successfully completing the troubleshooting, the machine restarted and it was possible to withdraw money from it.
Whatever the digital transaction network, even a small hardware fault in the backend can bring the entire system to a standstill, and today's experience is a real proof of that. The feeling of being able to overcome the complexity and bring the machine back to life at the end of the day was really great.
