There are thirteen festivals in the twelve months of the Bengali calendar, and the biggest festival of the Bengalis during this time of summer is probably the Mango Festival. Even in the scorching heat, rows of raw and ripe mangoes are displayed in the market. The familiar surroundings are more enjoyable than the shopping itself. Recently, while buying mangoes at the market, I came across such a wonderful moment that I have framed it and piled it on the pages of a magazine. Looking at the green, ripe mangoes fills my heart with emotion. The experience of buying mangoes at the market is not just about making a bargain. It is accompanied by a strange emotion. The whole process of picking up one mango from the seller's hand, sniffing it close to the stem to take in the familiar sweet-sour aroma of raw mangoes, and squeezing it is a very enjoyable experience. The slight gummy stains and slight yellowish hue on the mangoes indicated that they were fresh mangoes, just moments before they were ripe.
Each Bengali has a different plan behind buying these raw mangoes. Some look for the very hard sour mangoes for mango dal or raw mango sharbat, while others look for Kashmiri pickles. Or the perfect size mango for sweet pickles. When you go to the market to buy mangoes, the seller and the brother have tied the mangoes inside, or which one is better for pickles, this juicy discussion and bargaining is different. The most beautiful moment is when you see this pile of mangoes and remember your childhood days. Those days of picking mangoes in the garden after the storm of Kalbaisakhi on the afternoon of Baishakh-Jayishtha. Or the memories of stealing mango pickles made by my mother, dried in the harsh sun, seem to come back to life in this basket of mangoes.
