The last Engelhard Prospector I bought was a 1987 American Prospector. That was at the end of 2022, and would you believe it's been that long ago!
I 💕 L-O-V-E 💕 the Engelhard American Prospector Silver Rounds. I bet you have them in your stack like me! The Engelhard American Prospector silver rounds are so popular.
Engelhard's 1 oz .999 fine Silver rounds were the first bullion rounds that were marketed to the public. Produced from 1982 to 1987, these Silver rounds are often considered the most recognizable and most valuable by investors and collectors alike. Engelhard was once an American owned fortune 500 company and is now a German manufacturer BASF. Engelhard produces investment quality platinum, palladium, silver and gold and is the world’s largest precious metals refinery. Source
I took an inventory of my Engelhard, or what is left of it after giving away two or three. And I had: one 1987. three 1986s, one 1985, five 1984s, one 1983, and two of the 1982s. They certainly are becoming less and less affordable for me.
Until lately! I recently found a seller selling the American Prospector Silver Round at reasonable prices. So, I grabbed some!
Engelhard 1983 The American Prospector Silver Round
This American Prospector Silver Round is second year of release of the renowned Prospector series. It is regarded as key date. Since Engelhard rounds were the first bullion round to be sold to the general public, they have gained historical significance and collectability.
The 1983 Englehard Prospector Silver Round is a key date, along with the 1987. Both have lower mintage numbers. So when I found this advertised, and for a lower price than a regular Engelhard American Prospector Silver round, I bought it immediately.
So not only did a buy ONE, and TWO...
but three 1983 Engelhard American Prospector Silver Rounds!
These classic one-ounce silver rounds are no longer in production and are getting harder to find in perfect condition. Engelhard stopped production of these round in 1987. Since they are virtually entirely secondary market rounds, some wear is inevitable given their age and circulation.
