Greetings to the readers and the Hive Garden community. I think this is the first time I've posted here. I congratulate @minismalholding for this beautiful community. Today I wanted to share with you a humble, but at the same time valuable plant (in fact, all plants are valuable), which is very resistant, and it is ideal to have it in our gardens and orchards, because it is a honey plant, which provides food for Apis and Meliponas.
Saludos a los lectores y a la comunidad Hive Garden. Creo que es la primera vez que publico aquí. Felicito a @minismalholding por esta bonita comunidad. Hoy he querido compartir con ustedes una humilde, pero a la vez valiosa planta (de hecho, todas las plantas son valiosas), que es muy resistente, y es ideal tenerla en nuestros jardines y huertas, porque es una planta melífera, la cual provee alimento a Apis y Meliponas.
This plant in my town is known as verdolaga o florecita de monte, (small field flower), although of course, in other regions of the country or Latin America, it is known by other names, and one of them, (the best known) is QUELITE, and its scientific name is Talinum fruticosum, although it is also known as water leaf. This plant is super resistant, and I say this from my own experience, since this plant that I show you today was given to me 6 years ago. About a year and a half ago, I had the bad idea of placing some remains of potato peelings in it, in order to enrich (that's what I thought) the substrate where it was planted, and it was a fatal mistake, since the plant almost died. I suppose that these potatoes had received some agrochemical treatment that almost dried out the plant. In fact, even when I removed those peels from the plant's substrate, a branch of just 2 centimeters was left alive, which was the one that after more than a year, It was able to sprout and grow to the size that I show you today.
Esta planta en mi pueblo se conoce como verdolaga o florecita de monte, aunque claro, en otras regiones del país o de Latinoamérica, se conoce por otros nombres, y uno de ellos, (el más conocido) es QUELITE, y su nombre científico es Talinum fruticosum, aunque también le conocen como hoja de agua. Esta planta es súper resistente, y lo digo por propia experiencia, ya que esta planta que hoy les muestro, me la obsequiaron hace 6 años. Hace aproximadamente un año y medio, se me ocurrió la mala idea de colocarle unos restos de cáscaras de papas, a fin de enriquecer (eso pensaba yo), el sustrato en donde está sembrada, y fue un error fatal, ya que la planta casi murió. Supongo que estas papas habían recibido algún tratamiento agroquímico que casi secó la planta, de hecho, aun cuando yo retiré esas cáscaras del sustrato de la planta, quedó viva una rama de apenas 2 centímetros, que fue la que luego de más de un año, pudo retoñar y crecer hasta el tamaño que hoy les muestro.
Although I have used this plant for certain medicinal preparations, specifically in drinks to oxygenate the brain, as it contains calcium, magnesium and potassium; in other Latin American countries it has culinary uses, either in salads, stews and soups, (the whole plant is used), but I have not tried to make any recipes with it yet, but I will do so in the future. Regarding its intake, according to the bibliographic review that I carried out (I share the link at the end of this post), it should be eaten in moderation, since it is a plant that contains high levels of oxalates, which can affect the kidneys. It also contains hydrocyanic acid. Both oxalates and hydrocyanic acid are almost completely eliminated by cooking; but the nitrites and nitrates that it also has in its composition are not eliminated by cooking. It is not recommended for children or people who have problems with their kidney system. Its consumption in large quantities is not recommended.
Si bien esta planta la he usado para ciertas preparaciones medicinales, específicamente en bebidas para oxigenar el cerebro, pues contiene calcio, magnesio y potasio; en otros países de América Latina tiene usos culinarios, ya sea en ensaladas, guisos y sopas, (se usa toda la planta), pero yo aún no he intentado hacer ninguna receta con ella aún, pero lo haré a futuro. Respecto a su ingesta, de acuerdo a la revisión bibliográfica que efectué, (comparto el enlace al final de este post), hay comerla con mucha moderación, ya que es una planta que contiene niveles altos de oxalatos, que pueden afectar a los riñones. También contiene ácido cianhídrico. Tanto los oxalatos, como el ácido cianhídrico se eliminan casi en su totalidad por cocción; pero los nitritos y nitratos que también tiene en su composición, no se eliminan con la cocción. No se recomienda para los niños ni para las personas que tengan problemas en su sistema renal. No se recomienda su consumo en grandes cantidades.
I grow this plant (I have other specimens) because it is honey-bearing. Bees, both apis and honey bees, delight in its little pink flowers (there are other colors: yellow, red, white, etc.), which open early in the morning and close before noon. It is a plant that prefers the sun, since it blooms in full light. In the photos you can see an Apis bee enjoying its little flowers.
Esta planta la cultivo, (tengo otros ejemplares), porque es melífera. Las abejas, tanto apis como melíferas, se deleitan con sus florecillas rosadas, (hay de otros colores: Amarillas, rojas, blancas, etc.), que abren temprano en la mañana y cierran antes del mediodía. Es una planta que prefiere el sol, pues es a plena luz que florece. En las fotos pueden ver una abejita Apis disfrutando de sus florecillas.
