The glow-worm beetle, which glows on its own (fireflies)

Greetings, friends, and blessings to all. With just a few hours left before the May AN contest on the theme of the cutest animal comes to a close, I’m submitting my entry. To be honest, this animal wasn’t my first choice, but the universe helped me appreciate beauty in the darkness. I’d like to take this opportunity to invite @sofathana, @nanixxx, @ruffatotmeee, and @keritroberts to join the community and future contests.

My first choice was a small, very fast animal that I’m sure we all love for its elegance, but it didn’t want to show itself, and I’d rather not say which one it was to keep the mystery—maybe it’ll come in handy in the future. Instead, I’ll describe the experience and characteristics of the animal I chose, which is an insect.

At first glance, it might not look very attractive; it might even go unnoticed with its dull brown color, which serves as camouflage against the ground and dry logs. This insect flies low and is usually seen at night—the darker the night, the better, because that’s when its luminous superpower helps it on its way.

Pyrophorus (fireflies) are one of the insects that mesmerize humans, whether young or old. I remember that when I was little, in the garden and backyard of my grandmother’s house, there were magical nights filled with tiny lights dancing in the darkness, and my cousin and I would run after them; sometimes we’d catch them only to let them go again.

On these nights without electricity, my mom came in holding this insect in her hands; it looked beautiful and strange at the same time. It had been many years since I’d seen one of its kind, which made me reflect on climate change and the decline in this insect’s population in my community compared to the years of my childhood.

Description

It is 3 cm long, brown in color, with two yellowish spots on the sides of its thorax from which it emits a green light at night. Some sources say that, unlike fireflies, the light is constant, but they can regulate its intensity, becoming brighter when touched. In my experience, the light would go out at times and come back on when touched.

They are harmless to humans; they do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases.

Characteristics

Its greatest superpower is bioluminescence

Because of its bioluminescence, this insect can be confused with another, more famous member of its species called the firefly, since both can produce light. However, the main difference between them is that glowworms emit light from the sides of their bodies, which looks like part of their head or eyes—leading to confusion—while fireflies produce light through their abdomens. Interesting, isn’t it! 🤔 There is a wide variety of animals capable of bioluminescence—the ability to produce their own light through a chemical reaction. These lights can vary in color; among the most common are green, blue, and even yellow.

Fireflies generate their light through a chemical reaction between luciferin and luciferase, which are stored in glands; when combined with oxygen, this causes the oxidation of luciferin, producing bioluminescence. This process occurs very quickly, as it happens in emergency situations. The light is cold, meaning it does not produce heat.

Their eggs and larvae are also luminous. Growth is very slow.

Bioluminescence has three functions:

Mating: They use their flashes to communicate and attract mates in the dark, emitting light patterns specific to each species.

Defense: By flashing their light intensely, they scare off or deter predators, such as nocturnal birds or reptiles, by making them believe they are poisonous or dangerous.

Environment illumination: It allows them to navigate during night flights and search for food.

They emit sounds

I also noticed that it emits a hollow, repetitive “knock-knock” sound when stressed or nervous—I didn’t see its sex. 🤣 That’s why I hurried to take the photos; I didn’t want to make it suffer.

This peculiar sound is characteristic of this family of beetles, and they produce it when they’re on their backs; to flip over, they activate a spring mechanism on the underside of their thorax, which is where their English name “click beetle” comes from—it’s “click” in English and “toc, toc” in Spanish 🤣.

To take the photos, I had the help of two assistants: my mom, who found it and served as my model, and my aunt, who shone a flashlight, because you can’t take photos with a cell phone and the flash on without seeing where the insect was standing. It was a team effort; I’m grateful to both of them.

Diet

Adults feed on pollen and small insects. They are carnivorous, hunting termites and other insects.

Habitat

Bioluminescent beetles are found throughout tropical, subtropical, and temperate America.

They tend to migrate depending on weather conditions and move to less humid areas, where their larvae have a better chance of survival.

Reproduction

They have different sexual organs that classify them as females and males, but it is almost impossible to determine their sex with the naked eye; microscopic observation is required for that. They are similar in size, and both glow, making it difficult to tell which is female and which is male. However, during courtship, it can be observed that the male uses his bioluminescence intermittently to attract the female, and she responds by glowing in the same way but constantly, remaining perched in one place without moving.

Fun Facts

Fireflies have a life cycle lasting between two and three years depending on the species, most of which is spent in the larval stage (between 18–20 months).

Among the many things I’ve read, I came across a story about how some indigenous people make a sort of lantern by placing several of these insects in small cages. 😂

In Popular Culture

There are songs in the aguinaldo genre in my country that mention these little animals; most of them are set during the Christmas season, which is my favorite because of the lyrics and the memories they bring back. I also like the following song—it’s traditional Venezuelan music, specifically in the parranda style—and I hope you enjoy it.

Conclusion

The fireflies reminded me that every living being possesses energy and is capable of emitting its own light—some literally, like this animal—but we all have the ability to shine. we can do it too, and it is our job to make that glow grow brighter, without needing to take away or dim the light of others; on the contrary, the more we become a light that illuminates the path for others, the more radiant our inner light will be. Let’s learn to imitate the fireflies—let’s be a light in the darkness.

I hope you found my post interesting and that it provided you with some new information. Thank you very much for your time; I’ll see you in the comments.
