Greetings to all lovers of nature and its amazing creations. This is my entry for the contest that the Amazing Nature community has created for the month of February, as part of a series of monthly contests with different themes.

This month, anyone interested in participating had to choose an ecosystem on our planet. To see the proposals, check out the contest post. When I read about the ecosystems, I got very excited because I had a trekking trip to a natural well, but in the end, I decided on the uniqueness of the place where I live, which is in front of a lagoon.

I remember when I was about 9 years old and I would leave school exhausted and hot and walk home, I would walk through the streets and stare at the lagoon. It looked beautiful with the rays of the sun as it set, and sometimes colors would appear on the water like a rainbow. I grew up in front of the lagoon, then moved away, but life brought me back so I could breathe in the calm it evokes.

What are lagoons?

They are water reservoirs, which can be natural or artificial, and function like any other water reserve. They are said to be shallower than lakes. Their waters are calm, with no tides or movements unless caused by the air or breeze. They can be fresh or brackish and are also sources of life.

All the images in this post are of the Taiguaiguai lagoon, located in the state of Aragua in Venezuela, and it is specifically this lagoon that I will give details about. In order to photograph it, I walked for several days, climbing hills, walking to the viewpoint, and exploring streets I didn't know existed, stairs, and dirt alleys to get different angles of the lagoon. first from above and then, on my last expedition, I walked practically along the edge, as close as I could get, a one-hour, almost three-kilometer round trip from my house. Every day at different times and temperatures, which explains why you see photos of cloudy days and sunny days. From this experience, I have gotten to know more about the community where I have lived most of my life and about this enigmatic lagoon.

Natural or artificial lagoon

Natural lagoons, as their name suggests, are created by nature. Among the most famous natural lagoons in the world are the Blue Lagoon (Iceland), the Venice Lagoon (Italy), Aitutaki Lagoon (Cook Islands), Plitvice Lakes (Croatia), and in Venezuela, the Mucubají Lagoon in the state of Mérida, which I also have the privilege of knowing.

Now, I would like to pause between natural and artificial lagoons to ask the following question. If possible, before continuing to read, please answer honestly. Is the lagoon in these photographs, the Taiguaiguai Lagoon, natural or artificial to you? The community where I live was founded in 1950, approximately 76 years ago, but its name was consolidated in the 1960s, when the residents, inspired by the view they had in all directions when looking at the lagoon, decided to call the community Bella Vista, which means "beautiful view," because of the lagoon.

From the beginning, opinions in the community were divided. Some said the lagoon was natural and others said the opposite, but there was no data to prove it. My family always believed it was natural. In fact, for many years, it was said that sewage flows into the lagoon. If that is the case, it would be difficult to use it for crop irrigation and industrial purposes, which is why I always thought it was natural.

It was not until a few years ago that two important discoveries came to light that changed the course of history in Bella Vista. The first relates to biodiversity and the second to its origin, and I am just learning about it. The Taiguaiguai lagoon is artificial, a man-made creation designed to prevent flooding of the plains. The engineer in charge of this project was Inmer Belis Hernández (1923-1999).

It is important to mention that in the 1970s, the lagoon was a tourist attraction, as my mother tells me. where pedal boats operated and people could sail on the lagoon. Today, any recreational activity is prohibited because the water is not suitable for swimming or fishing as a result of the high level of pollution caused by the amount of waste dumped by companies in the area and, I suspect, also by the community's old sewers. However, many people ignore the prohibitions and dive in search of fish and other animals that they use for their own consumption and for sale, as it is their means of livelihood. 😣

Unfortunately, today, which was my closest expedition to the lagoon, I didn't find anyone fishing, perhaps because it's Sunday and they are resting, but on weekdays there are always people on boards or small boats fishing. I mistakenly thought they would be there today. Despite not finding people fishing or many animals, it was exciting to be so close to the lagoon. Walking along the shore, which I have passed many times in vehicles, was a new and exciting experience.

Biodiversity of the Taiguaiguai lagoon

This place has vegetation typical of lagoons. Near the shore, there are bora plants, which grow a lot in winter and cover 50% of the lagoon. I also saw ravine flowers, hehehe, I don't remember their name, and a bush that some people use to feed horses and pigs.

Among the animals that visit and live there are birds such as black-colored cotúas, herons, and curlews, guiriri ducks, among others, as well as iguanas, turtles, and even slugs that have been captured by people.

Regarding the discovery made at the Taiguaiguai lagoon, biologist and high school teacher Alfredo Correa, guided by his passion, observed the lagoon's biodiversity on July 7, 2024. photographed and recorded several videos to inform a group of reviewers from a university in the United States, confirming his discovery of a migratory bird that is native to Europe, Africa, and Asia and that had no record of existence in Venezuela, for which reason it was cataloged as bird 1421 with the name Rufo. This finding sparked the curiosity of other biologists, who in the following days found other birds new to this region. Source.

Lagunas, depósitos de agua, reserva de vida

Saludos a los amantes de la naturaleza y de sus creaciones asombrosas, esta es mi participación en el concurso que la comunidad Amazing nature ha creado para el mes de febrero, como parte de un ciclo de concursos mensuales con temas diversos.

En este mes todos los interesados en participar tenían que escoger un ecosistema de nuestro planeta, para conocer las propuestas te dejo el post del concurso. Cuando leí los ecosistemas me emocioné mucho porque tenía un paseo de trekking hacia un pozo natural, pero al final me decidí por la singularidad del lugar donde vivo que queda al frente de una laguna.

Recuerdo que cuando tenía unos 9 años y salía del colegio agotado y acalorada hacia mi hogar, caminaba por las calles y fijaba mi mirada en la laguna, se veía hermosa con los rayos del sol mientras se ocultaba, y a veces se ponían colores sobre el agua como un arcoíris. Crecí en frente de la laguna, me fui a vivir a otro lugar, pero la vida me regresó para que respirare la calma que ella evoca.

Qué son las lagunas

Son depósitos de agua, que pueden ser naturales o artificiales y tienen una función como cualquier otra reserva de agua, se dice que son menos profundas que los lagos. Sus aguas son tranquilas, sin mareas o movimientos a menos que sean por el aire o brisa, pueden ser dulces o salobres y también son fuentes de vida.

Todas las imágenes de esta publicación son de la laguna de Taiguaiguai, ubicada en el estado Aragua en Venezuela y sobre ella específicamente es que daré detalles. Para poder fotografiarla estuve caminando por varios días, subiendo cerros, caminé hasta el mirador y recorrí calles que no sabía que existían, escaleras y callejones de tierra para conseguir distintos ángulos de la laguna; primero desde las alturas y después en la última expedición 😁 caminé prácticamente por el borde, lo más cercano que podía estar, un recorrido de 1 hora y casi 3 kilómetros desde casa en ida y vuelta. Todos los días en diferentes horas y temperaturas eso explica por qué se ven fotos de días nublados y otros soleados. De esta experiencia me llevo haber conocido más a la comunidad dónde he vivido casi toda la vida y sobre esta laguna enigmática.

Laguna natural o artificial

Las lagunas naturales como su nombre lo indica son creadas por la naturaleza, entre las lagunas naturales más famosas del mundo se puede mencionar Laguna Azul (Islandia), Laguna de Venecia (Italia), Laguna Aitutaki (Islas Cook), Lagunas de Plitvice (Croacia), y en Venezuela la laguna de Mucubají en el estado Mérida que también tengo el privilegio de conocerla.

Ahora bien, hago un paréntesis entre lagunas naturales y artificiales, para realizar la siguiente pregunta y de ser posible antes de seguir leyendo responde con sinceridad. ¿La laguna de estas fotografías La laguna de Taiguaiguai es para usted natural o artificial? La comunidad donde vivo fue fundada en el año 1950, hace unos 76 años aproximadamente, pero su nombre se consolidó en los años 60, cuando los pobladores inspirados por la vista que tenían en todas las direcciones al mirar la laguna decidieron llamar a la comunidad Bella Vista, por la laguna viene su nombre.

Desde el principio en la comunidad las opiniones estuvieron divididas, unos decían que la laguna era natural y otros lo contrario, pero no había datos que lo comprobaran. Mi familia siempre creyó que era natural, de hecho por muchos años se escuchó que las aguas servidas desembocan en la laguna 🥴, si es así difícilmente sea usada para riego de cultivos y con fines industriales, por esta razón siempre pensé que era natural.

Fue hasta hace pocos años, que salieron a la luz dos descubrimientos importantes que cambiaron el curso de la historia en Bella Vista, la primera se relaciona con la biodiversidad y la segunda con su origen y apenas me estoy enterando. La laguna de Taiguaiguai es artificial, fue una creación del hombre, se realizó para evitar la inundación de los llanos y el ingeniero que estuvo a cargo de esta obra fue Inmer Belis Hernández (1923-1999).

Es importante mencionar que en la década del 70, la laguna era un centro turístico historia que me relata mi mamá, allí funcionaban botes a pedal y las personas podían navegar sobre la laguna hoy en día cualquier actividad recreativa está prohibida porque el agua no es apta ni para bañarse ni para pescar como consecuencia de la alta contaminación de sus aguas causadas por la cantidad de desechos vertidos por las empresas de la zona y sospecho que también por las antiguas cloacas de la comunidad. Sin embargo, muchas personas hacen caso omiso a las prohibiciones y se sumergen en búsqueda de pescados y otros animales que usan para su propio consumo y para la venta del mismo, ya que es su medio de sustento. 😣

Lamentablemente, el día de hoy que fue mi expedición más cercana a la laguna no encontré nadie pescando, tal vez porque es domingo y descansan, pero los días de semana siempre hay personas sobre tablas o pequeños botes pescando. Erróneamente, pensé que estarían hoy. A pesar de no encontrar personas pescando ni muchos animales fue emocionante estar tan cerca de la laguna, pasar caminando por la orilla en la cual he pasado muchas veces en vehículos fue una experiencia nueva y excitante.

Biodiversidad de la laguna de Taiguaiguai

Este lugar tiene una vegetación típica de lagunas, cerca de la orilla se encuentran plantas de bora, que en invierno crece mucho y logra tapar en un 50% la laguna. También pude observar flores de barranco je, je, je, no recuerdo su nombre y monte que es usado por algunas personas para alimentar caballos y cerdos.

Entre los animales que la visitan y viven en ella se encuentra las aves como las cotúas que son aves de color negro, garzas y alcaravanes, patos guiriri entre otros como iguanas, tortugas e incluso babas que han sido capturadas por personas.

Sobre el descubrimiento que se ha hecho en la laguna Taiguaiguai el biólogo y profesor de un liceo en la parroquia, el profesor Alfredo Correa guiado por su pasión el día 7 de julio del año 2024 observó la biodiversidad de la laguna, fotografió y grabó varios videos para informar a un grupo de revisores de una universidad de los Estados Unidos confirmando su descubrimiento de un ave migratoria que es originaria de Europa, áfrica y Asia y que no existía su registro en Venezuela, por lo que fue catalogada como el ave 1421 con el nombre de Rufo. Debido a este hallazgo se despertó la curiosidad de otros biólogos que días posteriores encontraron otras aves nuevas para esta región. Fuente.
