Coloring Flower Mandalas

I’ve discovered that when I feel sad, overwhelmed, and anxious, coloring helps me a lot. In recent months, there have been several times when I’ve felt terrible, like I didn’t want to live 🥲—nothing motivates me, my mind goes blank, and I can’t see any purpose or find anything that brings me joy.

Sometimes I think it’s hormonal, but I also think that’s just an excuse. Since I don’t even feel like talking or expressing my emotions, I look for ways to transform them. Right now, I’m doing well, which is why I’m able to write about and describe those episodes of demotivation.

A month ago I was feeling fine, but then the June 24 earthquake struck Venezuela—thousands dead, missing, or injured, with vast amounts of rubble and videos of physical and human devastation circulating on social media that hit me hard all over again. It was inevitable that I’d feel depressed; I stopped posting, disconnected for days, reflected, and realized I needed to cry and go through my grieving process. Even though I hadn’t lost any friends or family members, it was impossible not to feel bad. That’s why I remembered that every time I color, I feel better, so I grabbed my mandala book and let myself get lost in it.

Whenever I feel emotionally unstable, I color and focus on the present moment; I try not to think and slowly fill in each drawing, without rushing, with all the patience and time I have available—something I struggle to find because of my household responsibilities. But calm is necessary and a luxury I deserve so I can return to my center. I’ve had this coloring book for about two years now. At first, I thought I’d fill it up quickly, but I realized that coloring helped me on my sad days, so I was happy to see it fill up little by little.

I didn’t know that coloring was so therapeutic. Now I want to buy some wax or wooden crayons, because I only have markers and a limited variety of colors. This time I colored a cayenne flower—it’s unusual because I painted it two colors, blue and red; I don’t think anything like that exists in nature. When I started, I observed my emotions and became aware of how I was feeling, and by the time I finished, it was different—I couldn’t stop sighing and letting go, and I felt light and relaxed.

I recommend this activity—try it for yourself. Drawing or coloring takes us back to childhood, to a time when almost all of us were happy with so little.
