Gambling will always be a topic of argument with disparity of views and opinions from many persons. This is because gambling has made lives better and has also left lives in worst condition than they ever met themselves making some see it as just a harmless entertainment whereas others see it as a destructive vice.
When you get to check the percentage of persons gambling has elevated to the percentage of persons it has marred their lives, you'll get to see that the negative margin is glaringly wide and you get to ask yourself;
Why then are people still flocking around these gambling centres despite the risks?
Addiction and Hope!!
These are the greatest sponsors of gambling.
Gambling addiction, also called Ludomania is one of the hardest addictions to overcome. I think it will take the same determination and dedication as overcoming drug addiction. And with various gambling infrastructures making it easier for people to access these gambling features anywhere they are, it gets twice as hard to stop as you literally have to be in the comfort of your bed and gamble away your hard-earned money.
Also, the constant display of winners of massive prices give gamblers hope that they just need that one life-changing win and boom! Their story will change for good. They keep on trying and waiting for this big win and some might even die without seeing the big win come through...A chase of am elusive dream indeed
If Gambling Is Made Illegal
In as much as it's dealing with a lot of families especially the average families who their breadwinner is addicted to betting as he's always in pursuit of recovering lost funds often leading him to depleting funds and accumulating debts, you can't argue the fact that many families earn their salaries from these betting companies.
Making these companies illegal will render a lot of families unemployed further increasing the unemployment burden in a country like Nigeria.
Also, this increase in unemployment rate will further transcend to increased crime rate rendering the state insecure for everyone.
If Gambling Is Made Legal
Legalising gambling will help their activities to be regulated by the law helping limit the various violence that comes with running it as underground business.
Gambling will also generate a significant revenue for the government in form of taxes which when used appropriately will help in the growth of the country.
The solution to the negative impacts of Gambling shouldn't be banning them because one bad thing about addiction is that once you're hooked, regardless of whatever means is brought against it, you'll just find a way to survive, hence, making gambling illegal will just foster unintended consequences.
However, effort should be made to educate the masses on the relevance of "safe gambling" practices. Everyone should learn what it means to gamble an amount you could lose and set priorities in life.
Government could also come in with hosting campaigns and awareness on the negative impacts of gambling and also limiting the advertisements of these gambling winnings to a lesser extent.
It is particularly concerning that you cannot watch a Premier League match without being bombarded with different gambling advertisements for the fifteen minutes halftime break.
In conclusion, I would have outrightly supported the motion of making it illegal and banning it, but after critical review on the effects of banning it, I have actually come to agree that it is not a solution to stopping gambling, hence, a balanced approach that encompasses regulations, education and awareness campaigns should be adopted to reduce the harms it may cause.
