I got to join ASEAN Hive Community Challenge again after missing a few weeks. I was quite busy this week, but since I don't have any classes today, I was able to paint something for this week's challenge, which is Paint, Sketch, Or Draw.
When I saw the challenge post, I immediately decided to paint something... but what? After contemplating some more (lol), I decided to paint something that has something to do with the place I live in, Cebu. There are a lot of beautiful things about this island and I chose an activity very popular not only with the locals but also with foreign tourists. It's Swimming with the Whale Sharks in Oslob.

I personally haven't done this activity and I've only ever passed by Oslob on my way back to the city from our Dumaguete trip. For one, I can't swim... but I can imagine how exciting and amazing this experience must have been for people. The closest thing I did to this was see some dolphins jumping and following the ship we boarded on when we went to my father's hometown when I was a kid.
Anyway, let me show you some of the progress shots I took as I was creating this.

Of course, I started by preparing the materials I needed. I already prepped my watercolor pad a few days earlier (I just didn't have the time to actually do it soon. haha). I also prepared my acrylic paint, some paintbrushes, and cup noodles (haha... I recycled them as water holders and brush cleaners for when I'm painting).

We don't normally need to add water when using acrylic paint, but I like wetting the whole page before I do my background. For some reason, I find it smoother to blend and spread the paint.

I already have the image of the background in my mind, so I just scattered some paint on the watercolor pad... with the darker on each corner going lighter as we get to the center.

I just added a little bit of yellow so it would look like the light from the sun. The image I have in mind is a picture facing the sky taken from underwater.

I just made some adjustments with the blending and allowed it to dry for a few minutes. I was watching some true crime documentary earlier while painting this. XD

Once it was dry, I sketched the stuff I wanted to paint... I'm just doing the silhouettes since it's against the light... and I like this kind of art style as well... I like the contrast between a colorful background and the silhouette of the subject.

I outlined the whale sharks using the acrylic marker. I initially thought of just using my markers, but I changed my mind later on and decided to use black acrylic paint instead. It would be a practice and a test as to how stable my hand would be when using the detailer brushes. haha

The silhouettes were all done and I kind of like it. The humans swimming near the boats look funny. The differences in sizes also created some depth to it.

Lastly, I added some water bubbles and some finishing touches. It was so fun to do. It took me around an hour and 15 minutes to finish it including the drying part... and some distractions from the documentary that was playing on my PC. haha

Using my white pen, I signed it and wrote my username and the date today. Finally, I got rid of the masking tapes around it... and voila!!!
I enjoyed making it earlier today. It's as I've visualized it... I'm going to paint more when I get the chance. Unfortunately, though, I'd have to buy more acrylic paint soon since I'm almost out. Oh well, I can also focus on my pen sketches, too. :) Anyway, I'll end this post here. Thank you so much for checking this post out. I hope you enjoyed my painting as much as I enjoyed making it.
See you around! Good night from this side of the world! (^^,)/
