I was looking for another sea- or water-related animated film to watch for the monthly quest. I've watched several series in the past like Free!, Dive!!, Re-main!, Tsuritama, Nagi no Asukara, and so on. However, I have already written about them in the past and I thought it's better to watch something I haven't and talk about it.
I was in two minds whether I should watch RIDE YOUR WAVE because of the "romance" tag, but I'm glad I gave it a shot. Let's talk about it. :)
Released in 2019, Ride Your Wave revolves around the life of a Hinako Mukaimizu. She's a free-spirited girl who is bewitched by surfing and the sea. Because of that, she decided to enrol at a college in a coastal city. She hasn't really thought about her future and somehow chose this school due to its location.
Through this encounter, the two of them became acquainted with each other quickly. Minato's reliability and passion for saving people captivated Hinako. Minato, on the other hand, was curious about surfing and wanted to try it out.
Surfing brought them enjoyment and the feeling of being free. However, we can't deny the fact that this activity can be dangerous and very unpredictable. This was what Hinako realized when a certain surfing incident occurred which impacted her life forcing her to reflect more on what to do in her future. In search for her purpose, she started to look more into herself. With Minato on her side, little by little, she force her way to find that purpose and eventually ride her own wave.
I decided against sharing the trailer on this post as it gives out several spoilers, so I suggest you watch the movie directly and not check the trailer. haha
OK... I admit, the romance part especially in the first half of the movie was cringe. hahaha I'm sure fans of the genre would enjoy it, though. Well, let's set aside the cringey part... I think Minato is such an awesome character. He's such a green flag and I wonder if guys like him really exists. lol
When the surfing incident happened in the film, that was when I told myself, "I'm glad I decided to watch this." The supernatural and drama tags entered the scene and I just couldn't take my eyes off the screen. I enjoyed it more than I expected! I really like how the story panned out. This is the kind of romance I was looking for... the not so common one. lol
I like it when I see fantasy films that I could somehow psychologically analyze and relate it to reality. Of course, I can't explain the otherworldly phenomenon, but I could somewhat understand how the characters think and why they think that way. Yes, I'm complicated... haha
As for the technical aspects of the movie, they were also to my liking. The art and animation style was clean and pretty. Well, it doesn't really top the previous movie (Kaijuu no Kodomo) I watched, but this one also has its own charm. They music they used BRAND NEW STORY by Generation from EXILE tribe was also very fitting.
All in all, it was a good movie. I'm happy I didn't skip it because of its genre.
Thanks for reading and see you around! (^^,)/
