The aftermath of the President Biden issued landmark Executive Order
Artificial Intelligence or AI is on the minds of everyone at the moment.
I am sure you have been using it for a number of years. I know I had my first Alexa device about 8 years ago and I am sure it has been around for ten years.
indeed it is nothing new, I remember carrying our researching projects and designing Expert Systems which were fun and logic questions.
Of course the dangers of AI are now really being felt, even Biden himself being the object of a fake AI voice phone call to voters in the New Hampshire primary election last week.
Against that backdrop then three months ago, President Biden issued a landmark Executive Order.
This Executive Order was to ensure that America keeps leading the way in seizing the promise and managing the risks of artificial intelligence (AI)
If the actions really would be implemented then in theory it would be a heck of an order with far reaching consequences.
The Order directed sweeping action to strengthen AI safety and security, protect Americans’ privacy, advance equity and civil rights, stand up for consumers and workers, promote innovation and competition, advance American leadership around the world, and more.
Don't you just love the "and more" it is a bit like the "but" caveat!
White House AI Council
Just like in most countries there was a high level AI body set up. In this case it was the White House AI Council.
As you would expect it is made up of top bigwigs from agencies and federal departments. I have yet to confirm if private institutions were invited.
Yesterday the AI council was convened by Bruce Reed (the Deputy Chief of Staff).
The bottom line was that the agencies reported that all the 90 day actions tasked by the Executive Order have been completed.
It was also reported that there had been significant advancement in completing the tasks that had a longer timeframe.
It would appear that the progress obtained both on the 90 day tasks and the longer timeframe tasks, is going a long way to acieving the Executive Order's mandate "to protect Americans from the potential risks of AI systems while catalyzing innovation in AI and beyond."

Managing Risks to Safety and Security
There are all sorts of doomsday scenarios where the machines take over the world and destroy mankind and a myriad of other options.
The Executive Order therefore required a swarth of actions to be implemented within 90 days to address some of AI’s biggest threats to safety and security.
We all remember the Sam Altman and has left debacle.
So obviously some of these included getting disclosures from AI developers.
To mititgate those and other risks, agencies now have to:
- Used Defense Production Act authorities to compel developers of the most powerful AI systems to report vital information, especially AI safety test results, to the Department of Commerce.
- Proposed a draft rule that proposes to compel U.S. cloud companies that provide computing power for foreign AI training to report that they are doing so.
- Completed risk assessments covering AI’s use in every critical infrastructure sector.
Innovating AI for Good
On the flip seize, there are enormous benefits that could and should be gained with AI and it can be used for good.
So to seize "AI’s enormous promise and deepen the U.S. lead in AI innovation, President Biden’s Executive Order directed increased investment in AI innovation and new efforts to attract and train workers with AI expertise."
Over the past 90 days, agencies have:
- Launched a pilot of the National AI Research Resource
- Launched an AI Talent Surge to accelerate hiring AI professionals across the federal government.
- Began the EducateAI initiative to help fund educators.
- Announced the funding of new Regional Innovation Engines (NSF Engines).
- Established an AI Task Force at the Department of Health and Human Services.
The benefits of AI are absolutely massive and as long as it is managed properly and effectively then we should all have better lives.
But we also are in the hands of private companies wanting profit profit and goverments.
What could possibly go wrong ...
