Growing up at home at dinner time, my mother would make us eat everything that was on our plate. There are thousands starving in Africa that would give their left arm to have that would be her standard reply if you dared to leave something on your plate.

Of course now it would be not good parenting as you should let little Johnny do whatever he wants or so it would appear to this grumpy arse.

However it did instil values into me.

I love leftovers

I make no bones about it, but I love to cook and I love to go shopping (food shopping that is) and see what is on offer or discounted.

There is nothing better than getting a bargain and knocking something up for dinner, or throwing it into the freezer for a rainy day...

We call them whoopsies

We have the sell by and use by dates on most foods and by law they can't sell produce after the sell bydate, so come the evening or even earlier the shops will discount their fresh prouduce.

It does means bargains can be had.

These orange labels are from Lidl's one of the supermarkets here and they have handy labels telling you the discount.

These discounted products are generally known as whoopises

I quite often goto a shop in the evening and pick up whoopsies for use the next day.

When it comes to food and cooking I just cook whatever is available and knock something up.

I have never been a slave to recipes, so will knock up whatever I feel like...

Some of you know I am putting a site together and part of it is money saving tips and as part of this research I found a site called Olio.

I am going to share a fluffing frightening fact...

⅓ of food produced globally is wasted – and half of that happens in the home

That is pardon the French , fucking outrageous, 30% of all food is wasted and over 50% of that is in the home...

Seriously people need to take a grip.

So with Olio, volunteers goto supermarkets and collect these whoopsies I told you about, and then registered app members can then collect it free from volunteers.

I have discovered there is someone that volunteers who is 0.2 miles away so I shall go and have a look.

The only drawback is that you collect after 10pm.

Have you heard of the Olio app

Or is there some similar app that you use in your country?

I know with the cost of living going up and fluffing up every penny counts, so ways to save are needed. When you save money and help save our environment then it is a win-win for everyone!

When I try it out I shall report back on my findings!

Thanks for visiting and have a wonderful new week!
