Another week has flown by... Friday is upon us again, and so it's time for another edition of Nineties Friday. It is a weekly event started by @geneeverett where you can share just about anything from the decade of the 1990's. It can be music, movies, television shows, clothing, yearbooks, etc. Your imagination really is the limit! One lucky person will be chosen winner and will win 6 HSBI units, three from me and three from Gene.
From the header you can already tell the first pick of the day. This comes from a time when Johnny Depp tended to only play very odd roles long before Captain Jack Sparrow. I picked this movie heavily in part because this week Tim Burton's new movie "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" is being released. It is the long awaited follow up (34 years) to the original hit movie starring Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, and Winona Ryder. This new movie is one on my list of movies to see, but not in the theater. Movie theaters here in southern California have just gotten too expensive, the tickets are $17 to $20 per person then snacks or drinks make airport prices on bottled water seem reasonable in price. For two people you could be out $80 to $100.
Edward Scissorhands
Edward Scissorhands was released in December of 1990 by legendary director Tim Burton and music by Danny Elfman. Starring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder the film was a huge commercial success. Burton created this story based on his own experiences growing up as a social outcast. Edward is a creation of a scientist who dies of a heart attack before he is able to finish creating Edwards' hands. Years later he is discovered by a Avon saleswoman, Peg, going door to door and brings him to live in her home.
Edward falls in love with Peg's daughter Kim. This doesn't make Kim's jealous boyfriend happy who beguiles Edward into picking the lock on his father's home. An alarm goes off and Edward is arrested. He then becomes shunned by the community.
It's a great film is you haven't seen it. Both Tim Burton and Danny Elfman consider the film to be their personal favorite work in their careers.
What About Bob?

This comedy starring Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfus was released in 1991. The comedy dynamic between the two actors was hilarious. Ironically, the actors hated each other while making the movie... Murray plays Bob who is a psychiatric patient who drives his doctors insane, and Dreyfus plays Dr. Marin who has the luck of picking Bob up as a patient right before leaving on a family vacation. Bob feels he desperately needs his doctor's help and tracks him down where he is on vacation and insanity follows. This one is a true classic with both Murray and Dreyfus at their comedic finest.

Formed in Seattle, Washington in 1987 by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. In the early years they went through several drummers before settling on Dave Grohl in 1990. Their first album "Bleach" in 1989 was praised by critics but failed to sell very well. There are some great songs on there if you ever have a chance to listen. In 1991 they release "Nevermind" that changed the face of rock music forever. It was essentially the end of hair bands and glam rock. Off that album came this single "Come As You Are":
Metallica

Formed in Los Angeles in 1981 Metallica has become one of the most influential bands in heavy metal over their career. The album Metallica (often called the black album) was released in 1991, it had taken the better part of a year to produce and went way over budget costing well over a million dollars. It also is credited with leading to two of the band member's divorcing their wives. It was a huge success and sold in excess of 30 million albums and produced multiple hit songs. Among them came this one: "Unforgiven":

Formed in Long Beach, California in 1998, not too far from where I live currently. The band was comprised of Bradley Nowell (vocals), Eric Wilson (guitar), and Bud Gaugh on drums. They produced music based on punk, ska, and reggae like many other southern California bands at the time, including the band No Doubt (another of my favorite southern California bands.) They had developed a large following in California by the early 1990's. After several albums that weren't huge commercial successes they released their self titled album in July of 1996 that became a huge seller. Sadly Nowell had become a heroin addict and overdosed in May 1996 before the album was released.
Heroin is one nasty drug and not one to be messed with...
Because I spent most of the 1990's in countries that really only spoke Spanish, I usually include one song in Spanish since that was most of my music experience of the 1990's.
Shakira

Shakira is always a fun choice because she bridged the gap into English music and is know by everyone around the world. In 1995 her album "Pies Descalzos" (Barefoot) made her a huge star in the Latin American music scene. Her second album "Dónde Están los Ladrones?" (Where Are The Thieves?) was another best seller that launched her English music career. One of the biggest hits off the album was "Ciega, Sordamuda" (Blind, Deaf, and Mute). Here's a live version:
