I'll be touching on a pretty sensitive topic in this article and one of the reasons for making this blog is the horrible market today and the ongoing tariff trade wars.
Sometimes you'll hear or see in the news that America has imposed a tariff on China or America has ban Russia from something or a country has declared war against another nation. Classic example, Israel and Hamas conflict or Russia and Ukraine war.
When you see this as the caption of a news article, it's the most misleading title of all time. Do you think the people of America want to impose tariffs? No, it's Donald J Trump, the president and his administration that make that decision.
Yes you may argue that they voted for Trump so it's their fault, but I could counter argue that they didn't sign up for a tariff trade war.
Some actually like the Tariffs situation but clearly, the majority of the world doesn't. This is the issue of governments.
Politicians and corruption has been used in the same sentence more than politicians and honesty has. There's a saying, absolute power corrupts absolutely and history has proven that to be as factual as the existence of gravity.
If governments won't change from being corrupt, the only option left is for nations to evolve and figure out a way to operate without the traditional government.
Indeed, it's impossible to run any group , team, relationship or business successfully without authority figures or entities who will make the smart decisions on behalf of the entire team or group. So we need leadership but it doesn't necessarily have to be in the form of the traditional government.
What happens if we don't have a government and what if people in a nation could make all the big decisions together in a fair and open way?
This is where DAO comes into play.
DAO stands for Decentralized Autonomous Organization. It's more like a huge online group where everyone has a say and their opinions are valued. There are no presidents, no kings and no secret deals made.
Everything is done using computers and code on what we call a blockchain. Since I'll be sharing this on other platforms like Reddit, I'll assume not everyone knows what Blockchain is. It’s kind of like a big public notebook that nobody can erase or change without others seeing. That's where the transparency is.
How exactly would a country operate using DAO?
Instead of politicians making the laws for the nation, everyone in the country gets to vote on new laws or rules. You want a new school built? People vote. You want to change a law? People vote. You want the money to be spent on healthcare and not roads, people vote. It’s all fair, well kind of.
The rules that'll be made in the nation aren't just written in books like the laws of a nation is. These rules are written in computer code which is called smart contract. The contracts are handled by the computer, so there's no dishonesty.
A politician can be given funds to construct a hospital for a community, he secretly uses less money than he was given and steals the rest of the money. The smart contract won't need that money for any selfish reason because it's a computer.
Another interesting thing is that Taxes and public money goes into a digital wallet as the treasury of the nation. Since it's Blockchain, everyone can see how much money is there and where it goes. The people can even vote on where the money goes.
I think this is a step further than what we describe as democracy today. Good luck stealing and hiding money in a DAO nation. If someone tries to steal money, it's either the code will stop them or everyone can see what they just did.
When there's a crime, there's no single judge that'll determine the fate of people, both guilty and the innocent. It's going to be a group of people that handle the DAO that'll vote fairly to solve the problem or pass judgement. This is called a decentralized justice. It's more than a one man judge.
What happens to government workers? Well, they'll still be in business. The DAO can be used to vote and hire them. They get paid from the treasury and must do a good job or they won't get hired again. There's no favoritism, family sentiments or bribery to get a license you don't qualify for. That'll mean quality work everywhere.
If it's so great, how come we're not doing it today?
For starters, DAO is still in the early stages and would need more time to advance to a point where it can actually be used.
DAO would put the government out of work.
The government is still in power and they don't have intentions of letting go of their power so they'll either fight it like they fought crypto for so long, or they'll embrace it but add their own tweaks such that they still have the final advantage.
Even if everything goes as planned and DAO is established, there's still a negative side to it.
A country where the people are in control and not just some few leaders would sound like the perfect utopia but it's not going to be that easy. We could encounter major problems here.
What if people don't agree, which is likely?
What if someone with advanced tech and knowledge managers to hack the DAO system?
What about the people who don't understand the technology and can be swayed by smart people to make wrong decisions?
So would you want to live in a country that operates on DAO or would you rather live in the usual country and hope that good men and women take up leadership roles?
