It's time for another garden project here on the @run-a-muck-farms homestead. My tomatoes and pepper plants are starting to get big enough that they need support, the tomatoes especially. I had been playing with some ideas about building a trellis out of some old fencing instead of buying something like a round tomato cage so that I can train them to just go up the trellis. So after seeing my poor tomato plants starting to lean over, it was time to get the job done.

First, I gathered up all the posts I would need and started spacing them out in the raised beds so that I can get as much support as possible.

Next was to go and get the old rusty fencing that was left over from the original garden fence.

I tried to find the center of it, which I was off by a section, but it didn't really matter. Then I took my wire snips and worked my way down. I had to man-handle them a bit because I really needed some bigger wire snips.

Once I had them cut into sections, I had to lay them out on the drive way and try to straighten the sections out. This took some tugging, pulling, and a bit of stomping to get them as straight as I could.

Once I had them somewhat straight, at least enough to wire on to the posts, I took them into the garden and got started. I wired them up to the posts using some old mechanic wire I had laying around the shop. This stuff is good for so many things, haha.

I worked my way down the beds and got the fence panels all wired up to the posts, and now I have some trellises that I can train my tomatoes and peppers to climb up and use as support!

You do have to be careful though when moving your young plants around, especially if they have little fruits popping out. I ended up breaking off a tiny little tomato that was coming out. It was sad, but is what it is, there are plenty more little blooms starting to pop out!

So now my plants have little walls to climb! This will let the plants spread out and get more light to each part so that I can get more tomatoes popping out!

This took the place of another project I was going to do today, because it's starting to get pretty hot already in the southeastern US and I didn't feel like melting in the humidity today. So, I am basically working one project at a time when it's bearable outside, haha. Even though it's not what I was planning, it needed to get done and I am happy with the results!

Until next time...

Keep being ungovernable, grow fresh food, and just enjoy your life!
