The garden is starting to produce some serious melons! I harvested my first ripe cantaloupe and have a couple of others that are probably just a couple of days or so away from being ready! This has been one of my healthiest plants so far and will be growing more next year for sure. This year, I am just trying out what works, what doesn't and what I am going to proceed with next year, as well as what I am not going to continue with. We'll just say, cantaloupe is a winner!
There are six more melons growing on this one plant, and like I said, a couple of them are almost ready to go. I am really getting excited that I am finally seeing some good fruiting action. My strawberries were kind of a bust, and my tomatoes keep getting attacked by bugs and hornworms, so they have been a bit of a bust as well. But my cantaloupe and zucchini have been doing great!
Speaking of zucchini, check out this monster! Seriously, this thing is huge, lol. I am glad I planted just one of these because I can't eat zucchini this fast, lol. At least I know next year when I start trying to produce to sell, this will be one I will be growing for sure! There are a couple of more that aren't quite ready, but hey, I have enough to go around right now, lol. And that's after taking my grandmother some for her to cook, lol.
But, the best little surprise of the morning was when I went to move around some of the watermelon vines and saw my first little watermelon starting to grow! I thought I was never going to see one start up, haha. It was the last plant that went into the garden, and with how late I was in planting it, I am not really shocked that it is taking a while.
My two biggest problems with the garden this year have beem my lack of knowledge and experience, and my severe lack of patience. I am learning a ton though and that is the biggest win yet. I know what I will be planting next year, and that is going to be a bunch of melons, lol. Tomatoes and peppers have been more of a hassle, and the strawberries were starting out fine, then fizzled out into nothing. That was a lack of knowledge thing...
Those are just some hard but valuable lessons. I am just glad now that I am finally starting to see some real results and beginning to pick more than I can eat, at least when it comes to zucchini, haha.
