Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the world at a rapid pace. Artificial Intelligence is applied in the business, educational, healthcare, and even military sectors, as it is today. The advent of self-driving AI weapons systems has been one of the most significant advancements in modern warfare. Weapons capable of making decisions and attacking targets with minimal or no human control.
These include drones, robotic tanks and automated defence systems. However, many think these weapons can help make countries safer, others think these weapons can cause ethical, political, and military issues. I think AI weaponry that is autonomous to the extent of being independent of humans can be useful, but it can be a very dangerous thing so it should be handled carefully.
An ethical issue with the use of autonomous weapons is the question of life. Unlike humans, machines lack feeling, compassion or empathy. As a result of a glitch in its system, an AI weapon could strike not only the wrong person, but the wrong people. They can be innocent civilians or children or even friendly soldiers. I don't think that somebody should take all life and death decisions without any human intervention. Robots do what they're told and what data they're given, but human beings can think.

Another moral issue is accountability. Who is to be held responsible if an autonomous weapon kills innocent people as a result of its mistake? Who should be held responsible: the programmer, the military leader, the government or the company who developed the AI system? This question is very difficult to answer. In the old fashioned way of warfare, people are accountable for their actions. However, there is a confusing concept of responsibility when it comes to AI weapons. It can make it challenging for victims and families to achieve justice.
Autonomous AI weapons have the potential to escalate tensions between nations on a political level. But even powerful countries are waging a fierce battle to create their next generation of military technology. AI military systems are being heavily developed in countries such as the United States, China and Russia. This can result in a lethal arms race, as countries build ever more lethal weapons and projects to out-do each other. I believe that this competition can give rise to fear and distrust between countries rather than peace.
Another political implication is that smaller nations could see themselves vulnerable to countries with more advanced AI weapons. Governments also might leverage these systems to unfairly govern citizens, silence opposition groups, etc. The threat may escalate even further if autonomous weapons are used by terrorists or criminal groups. That's why international laws and agreements are relevant. Cooperation among countries is required to regulate the development and deployment of AI weapons.
From a military perspective, autonomous AI weapons come with certain benefits. In battle, these systems can respond quicker than a human. They can work as long as the day and night without getting tired and emotional. AI drones can also save the lives of soldiers since fewer human beings have to enter dangerous areas of warfare. In certain circumstances, this can save military lives.
But there are significant military dangers too. Enemies can hack the AI systems. When hackers acquire control of these weapons, they can use them against their creators. Technical problems can also occur in battle. A machine can misinterpret information and consequently attack the wrong target. The use of AI in warfare is not without its dangers, and I think the more you can rely on it, the more dangerous it is because no technology is perfect.
The other military worry is that autonomous weapons could be easier to initiate a war. If there are many soldiers that could be killed in a war, then the leaders may hesitate to go to war, but if they know they will not lose many soldiers, then they may be more willing to go to war. This can lead to an escalation in violence across the globe rather than a decrease. War ought never to be easy or automatic.
In conclusion, autonomous AI-powered weapons systems bring both opportunities and dangers. Ethically, they pose questions concerning human life and human responsibility. On the political side, they can help to worsen international tensions and generate fear among countries. Militarily, they can enhance speed and decrease the dangers to soldiers, however they can also bring about hacking, mistakes, and perhaps some more wars. I don't think AI technology can completely replace human judgment in warfare, I think it should be used to assist them. Governments in the world need to establish robust laws and moral guidelines to ensure that in the future, these weapons will not bring about destruction of peace and humanity.
