So..this little cute blob is commonly known as sea toad and coffinfish. Scientifically described as Chaunacops melanostomus, it's one of the few actually adorable species of anglerfish..as most are just ugly, ugly motherfuckers!

As of today, there are 4 species in the genus Chaunacops that have been described:

  • Chaunacops coloratus
  • Chaunacops melanostomus (Tadpole coffinfish)
  • Chaunacops roseus
  • Chaunacops spinosus (Eastern tadpole coffinfish)

They all look quite similar, featuring a globose heads and small spine-like scales.

Depending on the species and age, their color may vary from blue to red or rose.

They all are believed to occur in depths greater than 2500 in the waters of Eastern and Western Australia.

Like other anglerfish they have a modified dorsal fin that acts as a lure to attract prey. This lure is bioluminescent and emits light mimicking the appearance of small prey. They pretty much are the fish version of a fisherman. ^-^

All four species are quite elusive and we really don't know much about them!

But we do have some really cool video footage thanks to various scientific rovs of
