A few days ago I showed you my latest acquisition, a beautiful 10 Escudos piece from 1955.
Today I took the other escudos coins out my crypt and figured to play a bit with my camera and my small fleet ^_^
In case you wonder, the ship depicted is a Caravel, a type of ship used by the Kingdom of Portugal to sail the seas in the 15th century:
The caravel is a small maneuverable sailing ship used in the 15th century by the Portuguese to explore along the West African coast and into the Atlantic Ocean. The lateen sails gave it speed and the capacity for sailing windward (beating). Caravels were used by the Portuguese and Castilians for the oceanic exploration voyages during the 15th and 16th centuries, during the Age of Discovery. source
The two best-known caravels that you have probably heard before are the Pinta and the Niña, two of the ships that sailed with Columbus. There was also Santa María the largest of the three ships used by Christopher Columbus but that one was a carrack.

Fyi, the big 10 escudos coin is 0.680 silver. The other two are 0.650. Not great, not terrible ☺️
As a sidenote, I really love these coins. The Caravel on the front and the epic Portuguese coat of arms on the other...It makes you feel like you are holding a true pirate coin :)
Eventually, I'll be adding more on the stack as I always keep an eye out for these coins for the right price. Till then, this is my small caravel fleet ^_^
