Ok, not bad ^_^

As you can see, today I chose another of my silver stamp copies. I had no idea who that geek that was but the engraved text "poste vaticane" on the front and ""Pius XX"" hinted it was a child molester a pope or something.

After a bit of googling I did find how the original stamp looked like

And sure enough, the portrait depicts a pope, Pope Pius XII (1939-1958):

Sure enough, he chose a tough time to be a pope. At least I would stay away from the position of being most of Europe's spiritual leader during world war 2. After doing a bit of reading on him it seems like the Allies expected more action from him...And the Nazis considered him an Allied sympathizer ๐Ÿ˜… He also took some anti-commy action issuing the Decree against Communism. This essentially ordered that all commy Catholics were to be excommunicated as apostates from the Christian faith. Heh. The 40s were fun times ๐Ÿ˜‚ Here's a link to wikipedia if you want to learn more about him.

As for the actual stamp, it was part of a series issued by the Vatican in March 7, 1949. The set consisted of 11 stamps featuring images of Roman basilicas and one stamp (this one) depicting Pope Pius XII. A stamp set that many consider to be one of the most important and beautiful ever issued by the Vatican

Here is how the whole set looked like if you are curious

Not bad, I actually recognize some of these places :)

The set pics above are from this site which also has some brief info on each stamp in case you want to do some further reading!

Here's a quick rundown of the places featured in the rest of the set:

  • Basilica of St. Agnes

  • Basilica of St. Clement

  • Basilica of St. Praxedes

  • Basilica of St. Mary in Cosmedin

  • Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem

  • Basilica of St. Sebastian

  • Basilica of St. Lawrence

  • Basilica of St. Paul

  • Basilica of St. Mary Major

  • Basilica of St. Peter

  • High Basilica of St. John Lateran

Ok friends, I think this concludes today's post!

Hope you enjoyed yet another silver piece from my collection and maybe even learnt something new. I know I did :)

Yeah, still in the 0.7 range per grams although it's close to breaking 0.80 this time. I guess I'd better buy a few tons to help pump the price ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿณ
