As a Chelsea fan, one thing that has continued to concern me is the balance between our midfield and defence. We have players with quality, energy, and the ability to control games, but sometimes I feel we still struggle to find the right balance between attacking and defending.

That is why I find Xabi Alonso's recent comments about possibly changing our midfield structure interesting. The idea of playing with three central midfielders instead of two could be a good move, and honestly, I hope it brings the improvement we have been waiting for.
Though for me, the problem is not always about the quality of our players. Sometimes, it is about how we use them and how well they work together as a team.
When Chelsea attack, I want to see us commit players forward with confidence. However, we cannot afford to leave our defence exposed every time we lose possession. There have been moments when the opposition finds too much space in midfield and uses it to put our defenders under unnecessary pressure or even punish us.
This is where I believe a three-man midfield could make sense and make a difference.
Having an additional midfielder could help Chelsea control the middle of the pitch, protect the defence, and recover possession more effectively. It could also give our attacking players more freedom because there would be better cover behind them when we lose the ball.
However, I don't think simply adding another midfielder will automatically solve everything. The players must understand their responsibilities too, maintain their positions, and work together when the team is defending. Otherwise, we could still experience the same problems with a different formation.
Another thing I like about Alonso's approach is his willingness to consider tactical flexibility. Football is not a game where one formation works perfectly against every opponent. Sometimes, you need to adjust your approach depending on the strengths and weaknesses of the team you are facing.
With Everton coming up, I will be interested to see whether Alonso makes any changes and how the team responds on the pitch.
Of course, as a Chelsea supporter, I want us to win every game. But beyond the results, I also want to see a team that is becoming more organised, difficult to break down, and confident in its playing style.
My biggest hope is that Alonso finds the right balance between our midfield and defence. We have enough quality to compete, but that quality must translate into better performances and greater consistency.
I believe this tactical adjustment is worth trying. Now, it is up to Alonso and his players to prove that it can work.
