After their impressive 4-1 win against Paraguay in the opening game, many fans were eager to see if Mauricio Pochettino's side could keep up the momentum. They certainly did, producing another confident performance that left little doubt about who deserved the three points.
The breakthrough came early in the match. Just 11 minutes in, Folarin Balogun made a dangerous run into the box and sent a low pass across goal. Australia defender Cameron Burgess, trying to clear the danger, could only turn the ball into his own net. It was an unfortunate moment for the defender but a deserved lead for the Americans, who had started brightly.
The USA continued to push forward and nearly doubled their advantage several times before halftime. Their second goal eventually arrived in dramatic fashion. Alex Freeman headed the ball into the net after a corner, but celebrations were briefly cut short when the assistant referee raised the offside flag. Following a VAR review, the decision was overturned and the goal stood, giving the home side a comfortable 2-0 lead before the break.
Australia tried to change things in the second half, with coach Tony Popovic making three substitutions at halftime. The changes brought a bit more energy, but clear chances remained hard to come by. Goalkeeper Matt Freese was rarely called into serious action as the American defence stayed well organized and disciplined.
The USA could have made the scoreline even bigger. Balogun missed a good one-on-one opportunity, while Sergiño Dest also forced a save from Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beech. Australia had a couple of decent chances through substitutes Cristian Volpato and Connor Metcalfe, but neither could find the target when it mattered.
As the clock ticked down, frustration began to creep into the Australian side, leading to a few heated moments and late bookings. However, the result was never really in doubt.
With back-to-back wins and six points on the board, the United States have officially secured their place in the Round of 32. Alongside Mexico, they are one of the first teams to book a spot in the knockout rounds and are beginning to look like a team capable of making a deep run in the tournament.
