Today marks the ninth day since I brought my chicks home, and I must say I'm really impressed with how much they have grown in such a short time. Every morning when I check on them, I notice something different. Their feathers are coming out nicely, they are more active, and they have become much stronger than they were on the first day.
One of the most exciting things that happened today is that I can finally tell the males apart from the females. At first, they all looked almost the same to me, but now their physical features are becoming clearer.
Out of my 10 broilers, I discovered that I have 8 males and 2 females. Honestly, I'm happy with that result because male broilers usually grow faster and attain bigger market weights than females. Since broilers are mainly raised for meat, having more males is definitely an advantage for me. If everything continues to go well, I should have some good-sized birds ready for sale when the time comes.
The result with my 8 noilers made me even happier. After observing them carefully, I found out that I have 6 females and 2 males. This is exactly the kind of balance I was hoping for. Unlike broilers, my plan for the noilers goes beyond meat production. I want to keep some of them for egg production, so having more females means I can expect more layers in the future. That gives me hope for a steady supply of eggs and, hopefully, another source of income.
Apart from checking their sexes, I also made sure they were comfortable today. Their feeders and drinkers were kept clean, and they remained active throughout the day. They continue to eat well and drink enough water, which explains the noticeable growth I have been seeing. Thankfully, I still have not recorded any mortality, and I'm grateful for that.
Raising chicks may seem like a simple task, but every single day brings a new lesson. Watching these little birds transform day by day reminds me that patience and consistency always pay off. Small progress may not seem like much at first, but when you look back after several days, the difference is amazing.
I'm looking forward to seeing how they develop over the coming weeks. For now, I'm celebrating Day 9 with gratitude and optimism, hoping that the healthy growth continues until they reach maturity.
