Honestly, if I ever received an invitation to a lavish masquerade meetup organized by the Ladies of Hive community, I would not have to think too much about who I wanted to dress as. My choice would be Queen Amina of Zazzau.
Some people might wonder why I would choose a historical figure instead of a popular movie character or a famous personality from another part of the world. Well, for me, Queen Amina represents something I admire deeply: courage, strength, and the ability to lead even when the road is not easy.
One thing I find interesting about Queen Amina is that she is remembered as a powerful warrior queen. Whenever I think about her story, I imagine a woman who wasn't afraid to take responsibility or face tough challenges. I know I cannot fully imagine what life was like during her time, but her legacy makes me appreciate the kind of courage it takes to stand firm when things are difficult.
Another reason why I would choose her is that I am proud of my Nigerian heritage. We have people in our history whose stories deserve to be told again and again. Sometimes, we look outside our own culture for inspiration without realizing that we have remarkable figures right here at home. And for me, Queen Amina is one of those people whose story deserves to be celebrated.
If I were attending the masquerade, I would want my outfit to reflect the dignity and strength associated with her. I imagine wearing a beautiful traditional royal outfit inspired by the culture of northern Nigeria, with gold and red details, a royal headpiece, and accessories that give the appearance of a warrior queen. I would also include a beautiful mask to fit the theme of the gathering.
I can already imagine walking into the venue and having people admire the outfit. But beyond looking good, I would want people to understand the reason why I chose that particular character. It would be more than dressing up for a party, but it would be my own little way of celebrating Nigerian history.
I also admire the fact that Queen Amina is remembered as a woman who held a position of power and influence. Her story reminds me that strength and leadership are not reserved for men only. Women can be courageous too, make difficult decisions, and leave a lasting mark on the world also.
Of course, I know that wearing her outfit for one evening would not make me anything like the historical figure herself. But it would give me an opportunity to celebrate the qualities I admire in her.
