‎Hello Hives,

‎I have been thinking about this topic for a while because phones have become almost impossible to separate from our daily lives. Whether we are at home, at work, travelling, or in school, there is always a phone somewhere around us.

‎But when it comes to the classroom, I think things become a little complicated.

‎On one hand, I believe phones can actually be useful to students. Imagine a teacher is explaining a particular word or topic and a student does not understand it properly. With a phone, that student can quickly search for more information. Students can also use their phones to access educational websites, watch videos related to what they are learning, use calculators, take notes, or even participate in online quizzes.

‎So, I don't think it is fair to say that phones are completely bad for students.

‎However, there is another side to the story.

‎The same phone that can help a student understand a difficult topic can also become the biggest distraction in the classroom. A student might tell himself, "Let me quickly check my phone," and before he knows it, he has spent twenty minutes scrolling through social media.

‎This is something I think many people can relate to.

‎Social media, games, messages and videos can easily take someone's attention away from what is happening in the classroom. Even a simple notification can make a student curious enough to stop listening to the teacher.

‎For me, I don't think students should be completely forbidden from bringing their phones to school. Instead, there should be rules about when they can use them.

‎For example, students can keep their phones with them but put them on silent during lessons. They should only bring them out when the teacher allows them to use them for something related to the lesson. If a student breaks the rule repeatedly, then the school can take appropriate action.

‎I also think this can teach students something important and which  self-control.

‎We cannot remove every distraction from a person's life. At some point, students will have to learn how to control themselves even when nobody is watching them.

‎I personally would rather see schools teach students how to use phones responsibly than simply ban them completely.

‎A phone is just a tool. It can help you learn, but it can also waste your time. What really matters is how you choose to use it.
