This is one question I have found myself thinking about several times: if you had to choose between having a certificate and having a useful skill, which one would you choose?
I personally think both are important, but if I am being completely honest, I believe skills have become extremely important in today's world.
A certificate can show that you went to school or completed a particular course. It can also help you get certain jobs because some professions require proper qualifications. For example, you cannot just decide to become a medical doctor because you are good at treating people. You need the necessary education, training and certification.
But outside those professions, things can be a little different.
Imagine two people applying for a job. One has several certificates but cannot really do the work, while the other does not even have impressive certificates but has spent years learning and practising the job. Who would you rather employ?
For me, I would probably choose the person who can actually get the job done.
This is why I believe practical skills matter so much. A good plumber, mechanic, electrician, farmer, tailor, photographer, designer or even a content creator can build a successful career by becoming very good at what they do.
I have come across people who did not have the opportunity to go far in school but still managed to build something meaningful for themselves. They learnt a trade, gained experience and continued improving themselves. Today, some of them are doing better financially than people with impressive academic qualifications.
At the same time, I don't think certificates are useless. Far from it. A certificate can give you an advantage, especially when applying for certain positions. It can get your foot in the door.
But getting through the door is not the same as proving yourself.
Once you are given an opportunity, your ability to perform, solve problems and produce results becomes very important too. That is where skills and experience begin to speak for you.
So, can someone without a certificate compete with someone who has one?
Yes, definitely.
It may not always be easy, and there are some careers where certification is compulsory. But in many areas, a person who is skilled, hardworking, creative and willing to learn can compete successfully.
Personally, I would rather have both if I have the opportunity. A certificate gives you formal recognition, while a skill gives you something practical you can use.
At the end of the day, I believe a certificate can show what you have learned, but your skills show what you can actually do.
And in a world where people increasingly value results, being able to do something well is definitely a big advantage.
