To be honest, this is probably the best news I've heard today.
For the past several weeks, I have come across different updates about the pupils and teachers who were kidnapped in Oyo State. Every time I saw a new report, I hoped it would be the one announcing their release. Instead, there were rumours, conflicting stories, and growing fear. It was painful to imagine what those children and their families were going through.
Now, after spending 57 days in captivity, they are finally free.
Just thinking about it gives me mixed feelings. I'm happy because they are alive and back with their loved ones, but I'm also heartbroken that innocent schoolchildren had to experience something so traumatic in the first place.
Can you imagine sending your child to school in the morning, expecting them to return home in the afternoon, only to receive the devastating news that they had been kidnapped? No parent should ever have to live through that kind of fear. For almost two months, their families woke up every day not knowing what had happened to their children or whether they would ever see them again.
The children also deserve our thoughts. Fifty-seven days is a long time for anyone to spend in captivity, especially young pupils. Those weeks must have felt like forever. Even though they are finally free, I believe the emotional impact of that experience may stay with them for a long time. I sincerely hope they receive the care, encouragement, and support they need to heal.
As much as this rescue is worth celebrating, it should also remind us that our schools need better protection. School should be a place where children learn, make friends, and dream about their future and not a place where parents fear they may never see their children again.
Today, my heart is filled with gratitude. I'm grateful that this story ended with hope instead of tragedy. I also appreciate the efforts of everyone who played a role in bringing these pupils and teachers back safely.
My prayer is that incidents like this become a thing of the past. Every child deserves to feel safe in school, and every parent deserves the peace of knowing their children will come back home at the end of the day.
