This series seemed familiar to me, until I remembered that my family and I used to watch the Ingalls family on a show called “Little House on the Prairie.” In my opinion, this is an excellent new adaptation.

Little House on the Prairie".

When I started watching it, I found it heartening to see such a close-knit family. Despite the difficulties, they always maintained a positive and hopeful outlook. It so happened that when they set out on their adventure from the forests of Wisconsin, they were searching for new lands—hoping to find their dream place—after seeing brochures that suggested free land was available. It doesn’t take long before they realize they’re in territory that could be considered disputed, and that they might be seen as intruders. The Native Americans feel dispossessed of their land—the land of their ancestors and traditions—and as modernization takes hold, their home is on the verge of being lost forever, forcing them to be displaced or to accept a deal that always ends up benefiting the one who proposes it.

In this case, we meet the family’s pillar of support, Charles Ingalls. He is a man with a strong commitment to avoiding violence throughout the entire story. We also see that whenever he encounters a problem, he seeks a solution. And the problem would arise later, when he decides to settle his family on a stretch of the Independence prairies in Kansas. When they decide to build a house through an exchange of favors, an unexpected situation arises that shatters their dreams for the future. In this situation, the property titles seemed to be the source of uncertainty that would ultimately prove crucial.

His wife Caroline is the complete opposite of him. At times, she makes decisions that end up hurting him, which leads to arguments that Laura and Mary aren’t used to dealing with. This results in a series of unfortunate decisions, but luckily there’s always someone around to fix things. This suggests that throughout the plot, we’ll experience moments of tension and relief, which will bring out some truly beautiful emotions—and I believe that’s the series’ greatest strength.

There is also conflict among the girls. They don’t get along because the older one doesn’t know how to deal with her younger sister. On the contrary, the younger one is treated quite harshly, leading to misfortunes. However, something always happens that brings them together to cooperate and support one another.

Kindness shines brightest when they begin to get to know the locals, who come to help and visit them. In fact, one Christmas that seemed completely dreary and empty becomes colorful when circumstances bring everyone together once again to enjoy a dinner. That said, there is some tension between the indigenous people and the newcomers who have claimed the land, though this tension eventually eases thanks to the emotional bond Laura forms with one of the girls from the Osage community.

Throughout the plot, we realize that the true enemy is neither those seeking to settle there in search of a new life nor those who have belonged there for centuries, but rather a railroad company seeking to profit from a community’s suffering through lies. We then come to understand that everyone must stand united to face a greater problem that affects them all equally.

Without a doubt, this is one of the series I enjoyed the most because of the mix of emotions and the sense that goodness lies within each of us if we truly seek it. I think, in part, it also offers valuable lessons—something I really appreciate and that’s so necessary these days.

Do I recommend it? Absolutely. It’s an 8-episode series, so you’ll be finished with it in just a few days if you decide to watch it. You’ll thoroughly enjoy every single episode, and I know that if you give it a chance, you’ll come away with a great sense of satisfaction.
