Then came broadband, which offered much higher speeds. I can remember that moment when we contracted a service that was revolutionary from the point of view of possibilities. A service that included internet, telephony, and cable television. This service was the so-called cable modem, and it constituted a notable change when it came to enjoying audiovisual content without interruptions, and 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Luego llegó la banda ancha, que ofrecía velocidades muy superiores. Puedo recordar aquél momento en que contratamos un servicio que era revolucionario desde el punto de vista de posibilidades. Un servicio que incluía internet, telefonía y televisión por cable. Este servicio era el tal llamado cablemódem, y constituía un cambio notable al momento de disfrutar de contenido audiovisual sin cortes y las 24 horas los 7 días de la semana.
At that precise moment and around my adolescence, I remember playing video games and having to wait all afternoon for the game to download. The same went for wanting to watch movies on DVD. Probably the platforms that exist today were not available back then, but everything evolved one day from the same company.
In my case, we were subscribed to Telecentro, a telecommunications company that experienced significant growth starting in 2006-2007, when it included internet via cable modem. Since then, it has been evolving, but many competitors have also emerged, investing in technology and surpassing expectations.
Updates in internet speed were introduced periodically, which sometimes required changing the modem. Although I cannot say exactly when this happened, because there was a modem that I purchased myself from the brand Linksys, which after many years stopped working as the connection was very unstable, although it allowed me to access Wi-Fi at the time. With the new equipment, the feature of having wireless internet was covered, which was a novelty that managed to attract new customers at an affordable price.
If I had to mention the speed changes I had under the same company, I could say there were several. I went from 3 MB to 10 MB, then to 30 MB, later reaching 50 MB, which I then doubled in a promotion to 100 MB. Finally, the last speed I had was 150 MB until it was doubled again because I complained about the excessive price I was being charged and mentioned the modem was experiencing microcuts. They suggested a cheaper package and a modem change that could accommodate the speeds being offered at the time, with the arrival of a 4K decoder.
En ese preciso instante y rondando mi adolescencia, recuerdo jugar videojuegos teniendo que esperar toda una tarde a que se descargara el juego. Lo mismo si quería ver películas en DVD. Probablemente las plataformas que existen hoy en día no estaban disponibles para ese entonces, pero todo evolucionó un día por parte de la misma empresa.
En mi caso teníamos contratado Telecentro, una empresa de telecomunicaciones que tuvo un gran crecimiento a partir del 2006-2007, que fue cuando incluyó internet a través del cablemódem. Desde entonces ha ido evolucionando, pero también han aparecido muchos competidores los cuales también han invertido en tecnología sobrepasando estadísticas.
Cada cierto tiempo las actualizaciones en la velocidad de internet se hicieron presentes, lo que requirió en algunos casos el cambio del modem. Aunque no puedo decir cuando fue que sucedió con exactitud, porque hubo un modem que he comprado por mi parte de la marca Linksys, que después de muchos años dejó de funcionar ya que la conexión era muy inestable, aunque en su momento me permitió acceder al Wi-Fi. Con los equipos nuevos la característica de disponer de internet inalámbrico se vio cubierta y era una novedad que lograron hacer llegar a todos atrayendo nuevos clientes por un módico precio.
Si tuviera que mencionar los cambios de velocidad que he tenido bajo la misma compañía, podría decir que fueron varios. Pasé de 3 MB a 10 MB, luego a 30 MB, para más tarde llegar a los 50 MB, que luego pude duplicar en una promoción hacia los 100 MB. Finalmente la última velocidad que tuve fue de 150 MB hasta que me la volvieron a duplicar porque hice una queja por el precio excesivo que me estaban cobrando y por haber mencionado que el módem tenía micro cortes, por lo que me sugirieron un pack más barato y un cambio de modem que admita las velocidades que se estaban ofreciendo de momento, con la llegada de un decodificador 4K.
I can say that with the current 300 MB, the download speed is super fast. However, while other companies offer a symmetrical connection, this one is not. That's something I don't really mind, to be honest, but I have to clarify it anyway.
Puedo decir que con los 300 MB actuales, la velocidad de descarga es súper rápida. Eso sí, mientras otras compañías ofrecen una conexión simétrica, esta no lo es. Algo que mucho no me importa a decir verdad, pero tengo que aclararlo de igual manera.
One of the things I haven't been able to understand is why the speed on my mobile is limited to 50 Mbps, while previously it reached 120 Mbps. On my mother's mobile, it seems not to be limited, so it's a big question mark.
Considering that I am receiving a data transmission through a Wi-Fi network (Notebook), it is a speed that uses almost all the bandwidth. I have noticed a substantial change when consuming content, for example, browsing one of the sites I use most often; INLEO. Also, multimedia content, such as watching some videos on YouTube, now loads in 4K resolution in a matter of moments.
What ways do I have to take advantage of these speeds? The truth is, they are not varied. It is something I have been thinking about a lot because there comes a point where you don't notice the difference when consuming streaming content such as watching something on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. I do believe I could take advantage of this download speed if I had a PC that aligns with the latest graphics technologies, or on another note, aim towards a next-generation video game console. However, it will be an additional expense that I will need to consider, as well as think about whether I can afford it or not.
Otra de las cosas que no he conseguido entender es por qué en mi móvil la velocidad está limitada a 50 Mbps, mientras que anteriormente alcanzaba los 120 Mbps. En el móvil de mi madre parece no estar limitado, así que es una gran interrogante.
Teniendo en cuenta que estoy recibiendo una transmisión de datos a través de una red de Wi-Fi (Notebook), es una velocidad que aprovecha casi todo el ancho de banda. He notado un cambio sustancial al momento de consumir contenido, por ejemplo navegando en uno de los sitios que más utilizo; INLEO. También contenido multimedia, como ver algunos videos en YouTube, que ahora se logran cargar en resolución 4K en cuestión de instantes.
¿Qué forma dispongo de aprovechar estas velocidades? La verdad que no son variadas. Es algo que estuve pensando bastante debido a que se llega a un punto en que no notas la diferencia en consumir contenido en streaming como lo es ver algo en Netflix o Amazon Prime Video. Sí considero que podría sacarle ventaja a esta rapidez de descarga si tuviese una PC acorde a las nuevas tecnologías gráficas, o en otra dirección, apuntar hacia alguna consola de videojuegos de última generación. Sin embargo, será un gasto más que deberé plantear, como también pensar en si me lo puedo o no permitir.
