This plaza is a pleasant and iconic spot where you can enjoy yourself and relax. As you walk around it, you’ll find yourself wanting to stop and sit on the benches while you take a break from shopping, since it’s right in the heart of downtown, where there are many shops and other attractions, and you can also admire these well-preserved monuments and their surroundings.

A few days ago, I traveled from my hometown of Cumaná to Maturín. The trip took three and a half hours by shared taxi, which cost 20. I stayed in the community of Tipuro at my husband’s cousin’s house; they hadn’t seen each other in almost 10 years, so after we enjoyed catching up and some delicious meals at their house, the next day we headed into the city center. I’d been told that this city has many squares, and this was the first one I came across—and now I’m showing you its wonders and history.

I took these photos while we were walking down Bolivar Street after doing some shopping at the Mango Bajito store. There’s a pleasant atmosphere there where you can admire these bronze sculptures, created by the Italian sculptor Renzo Viancini in 1952, which serve as an important traffic junction and city landmark.

Juana Ramírez, “La Avanzadora,” 1790–1856, was an enslaved woman of African descent who led a contingent of more than 100 women supporting the patriotic artillery during the Venezuelan War of Independence. This plaza, with its statue, pays tribute to the courage, resilience, and leadership of Venezuelan women in the struggle for independence. In the center of the fountain stands this bronze sculpture; with her arms raised, she holds a machete (or sword/sabre) aloft in one hand while standing on a sphere, symbolizing her bravery and her leadership of the women’s artillery battery during the Battle of Altos de los Godos.

This fountain is blue and features four other accompanying sculptures: an indigenous man with his canoe, a person of African descent next to an oil derrick, a Creole man with a cornucopia, and a patriot soldier on horseback, all surrounded by green spaces, illuminated fountains, and modern features.

During my walk, I also noticed that the river looks wide, with its stone walls; thanks to the dredging carried out in recent months, the river’s flow is now smoother, and the surrounding area is well-maintained and clean, making it a pleasant place to visit.
