The Canvas of Childhood: Monsoon Waters, Banana Stem Rafts, and Sweet Sugarcane from the Fields!

Those who spent their childhood in the villages during the 1990s know just how pure and thrilling the joys of that time were. The memories of the 90s are endless, but today I want to share a story about a particular crop—sugarcane. In our regional dialect, it is known as Kuishal. My childhood is deeply intertwined with many memories of this sweet, tall sugarcane.

Nowadays, when I look at the village farmlands, my heart aches as those days rush back to my mind. There was a time when these fields were filled with abundant cultivations of sugarcane and jute, which have now almost vanished from our village.Diverse varieties of sugarcane, each with a different name, used to be grown in our farmlands. The yields were so massive that jaggery (gur) making workshops would be set up right inside the fields at the end of the harvest season.

A sweet aroma from these workshops would waft across the entire village and we would occasionally taste that fresh, juicy jaggery.Back then, every breath felt peaceful and deeply comforting. Many young men from the village worked at these workshops and would head to the weekly market (haat) after receiving their weekly wages.Centering around these jaggery-making workshops, a festive atmosphere would engulf the whole village.

However, our memories with sugarcane go far beyond just the jaggery workshops. We used to break fresh sugarcane straight from the fields and eat it—it tasted incredibly sweet.During the monsoon season, when the fields were completely flooded, we would build rafts out of banana stems (bura) and sail out to harvest the sugarcane. The dried leaves of the sugarcane served as our firewood, which we used to collect in a wonderfully festive spirit.Huge boats laden with sugarcane would glide across the river, looking like a floating festival.

Sometimes, while swimming in the river, we would playfully pull out sugarcane from those moving boats and eat them—it was a true celebration of childhood. We had so much fun together with friends our age! Today, when I look at the village fields, I deeply miss those sights.Standing on the riverbank, I reminisce about that golden childhood.Amidst the chaos of this busy city, my heart yearns to return to that childhood and those sugarcane fields. How wonderful that would be!
