Hello hivians, hello splinterland warriors and hello to all who are interested in playing but have not yet started. This post in particular is what I think can help beginners in the game and also shed some light for people who want to start playing.
Starting the game can be quite a lot when you do not get the right help or guidance to help you out. Fortunately for me, I had a friend, @abu78 who helped me navigate my way through the game when I started. It made things easier.
Spell Book
For starters, anyone who wants to play the game must make their $10 available. The $10 is for the purchase of a spell book. The spell book grants players with summoners and some monsters to battle with. These are just a few monsters or cards to help you set up for the game and understand the play.
Elements

Next, there are 6 elements from which you can choose monsters from. These elements depending on what you choose for battle will avail some cards for your use. The 6 elements are fire, water, earth, life, death and dragon. When you select a summoner from earth, you will be able to call forth monsters who live in forests and mountains. Same idea applies to the other elements.
Attack types

Another thing you need to know is the attack types. There are 3 attack types which are melee, ranged and magic attacks. Each of these attack types have their advantages and disadvantages as well. The magic attack monsters usually attack your health directly while the other 2 attacks attack the enemy’s shield before the health. Also, magic attacks do not usually miss but melee and ranged attacks are more susceptible to misses.
Card Basics
For new players, a card can be a bit loud based on the number of information it carries. Let’s take a look at this example.

This card is a summoner and it is from the water element. Let’s dissect the various information on this summoner.
At the top left corner where 4 is written, that is the mana cap. At the bottom right where you see 2, that is the card’s level. The higher the level, the more powerful the summoner is. Where you see “KELYA FRENDUL, that is the name of the summoner and of course the color of the card being blue tells you, its rarity. At the bottom of the card, there is +1 shield and +1 speed. It signifies that all friendly monsters will receive +1 shield and +1 speed.

This card is a unit and it is from the earth element. Let’s see what the card tells us.
The 5 at the top left is the mana cap while the 6 in blue at the left is the speed of the card. The 1 in purple at the left is the magic which is saying it renders a magic attack of 1. The 6 at the right-hand side in the heart is the health and the 2 at the bottom right is the level of the card. The higher the level of the card, the stronger it is. At the bottom we can see something like a wing. This is the flying ability which tells us the unit has a 25% bonus chance of evading melee or ranged attacks. The writing, REGAL PERYTON is the name of this unit.
These few things I have stated above can help you to start a battle. Now, as a beginner who has just signed up, you play in the novice stage which is more of a training stage. You are not restricted and you get to play using all the cards and no rules till you advance to the next stage which is bronze stage.
Rulesets

Once you advance to bronze, you begin to work with something we call rulesets. For every battle, you get a ruleset which limits your card choice. Say you are given the healed out ruleset, it means you cannot select which grant your monsters the healing abilities. Other rulesets include wands out, lost magic, sneak, thorns, among others.
Team Selection and Positioning
The way you select your team and line them up is important for battles. Magic attack monsters attack from any position while melee and ranged attack monsters do not. It is therefore important you read and check out for all information on the cards before you choose them for battle.
There are a lot more I could share but to not make this boring, I will end here. Please get interactive in the comments if you have more questions.
