"Life is a rainbow of vivid and neutral colors."

The most beautiful metaphor I’ve ever heard—my father, who was from Bocóno in Trujillo state, always used to tell me a story about the rainbow and the leprechaun with the pot of gold at the end of it. I don’t really remember it that well today, but it was one of those fascinating stories I loved to hear, and I’d imagine myself walking across the rainbow and reaching that big black pot filled with lots of gold.
To me, that metaphor means two things. The first is that sometimes we see that rainbow as a dream or goal we’ll achieve once we’ve accomplished something. I remember that some time ago I used to say, “When I graduate, that’s when I’ll be happy,” or “When I have this, I’ll be happy.” And you know, I’ve learned that happiness isn’t about reaching that pot of gold or that goal we’ve set for ourselves, because once we achieve that, we go after more.
That’s when we see the endless rainbow—we never actually reach that pot of gold because we’ll always want more. It’s an endless horizon, a race we can never win; People become obsessed with money without realizing that, yes, money is the means, not the end. The race of life isn’t just about money or living well—because that isn’t happiness. I believe the greatest treasure is having the people we love by our side, accompanying us on our journey.
On the other hand, we have to see that rainbow—with the rain and the sun—for what it is: like a Mario Kart race. Sometimes we’ll encounter obstacles along the way—some easy to get past, others a little tougher—but there are also good things on that path. There’s joy and happiness; I think we need to navigate this rainbow of life with the best attitude, learning from both the good and the bad, and enjoying what we have in the moment.
We have to enjoy life’s journey, learn that happiness is a personal choice, and learn to live because life is very short and we don’t know when it will end. that was one of the lessons from this earthquake: one day you’re fine, and life can be gone in less than 30 seconds. That’s why we must enjoy the scenery, the rainbow we have, and be grateful for everything—yes, grateful for the good and the not-so-good. Life ends in an instant, but we are the masters of our own destiny.
