Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous) manages to do both while creating something that feels completely different from almost any other anime.
Released in 2017 and based on the manga by Haruko Ichikawa, the series takes us into a beautiful and mysterious world inhabited by immortal beings made of gemstones.
When I first discovered Houseki no Kuni, its visual style immediately caught my attention. But beneath that beautiful surface, I found a surprisingly thoughtful story about identity, purpose, and how much we can change while still remaining ourselves.
💎 Phosphophyllite: Searching for a Purpose
At the center of the story is Phosphophyllite, or simply Phos, one of the youngest and most fragile Gems.
While the others have abilities that make them useful in battle or daily life, Phos struggles to discover where they belong.
That desire to become useful seems simple at first, but it gradually becomes something much more interesting: a search for identity.
What happens when the person you want to become is completely different from the person you are now?
🌙 A Beautiful but Mysterious World
The Gems live in a strange future where humanity is nowhere to be seen.
Their greatest threat comes from mysterious beings known as the Lunarians, who descend from the Moon and attempt to capture them.
The series doesn't immediately explain everything about this world, and that's part of its charm.
There is always a feeling that something much larger exists beyond what we're seeing.
✨ CGI That Actually Feels Essential
One of the first things you'll notice about Houseki no Kuni is its 3D animation.
CGI in anime can sometimes feel distracting, but here it becomes one of the show's greatest strengths.
The translucent hair, reflections, fluid movements, and gemstone bodies create visual effects that would be incredibly difficult to reproduce with traditional animation.
The result is a world that feels strange, elegant, and almost otherworldly.

Beneath its fantasy setting, Houseki no Kuni explores a surprisingly human idea: change.
Our experiences transform us.
We lose things.
We gain new ones.
Our priorities change.
