No quiero cargar de datos, pero siempre es importante contar un poquito de la historia de los diferentes lugares. Se hace desde el año 1905, casi de manera ininterrumpida. Lo único que pudo frenarla fue la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Así que imagínense la cantidad de ciclistas de gran envergadura que han pasado por ese circuito. Cualquier ciclista sueña con correr el Giro de Lombardía, y ni hablar si existe la posibilidad de campeonar.

I don’t want to load you up with data, but it’s always important to tell a little bit of the history of the different places. It’s been held since 1905, almost without interruption. The only thing that could stop it was World War II. So just imagine how many big-name cyclists have gone through that circuit. Every cyclist dreams of racing the Giro di Lombardia, and don’t even get me started on the chance of winning it.

      Este año se larga de Bérgamo y se llega a Como. Son 239 km con nueve subidas y unos 4.600 m de desnivel positivo. Durísima para cualquier ciclista. Y gran oportunidad para los grandes equipos y, sobre todo, para las grandes ciclistas que existen y existieron.

      El esloveno Pogačar ganó los últimos cinco ediciones, y qué genial hubiera sido que haya ganado esta y tenía el récord absoluto. Tras su caída en la Vuelta a España no puede estar presente, y estoy seguro que en el futuro lo va a lograr, pero de manera consecutiva hubiese estado mucho mejor. En las últimas dos ediciones, Remco Evenepoel secundó al gran Pogi... Así que imagínense la gran oportunidad que tiene en esta ocasión, y más aún siendo el ganador europeo hace muy poco.

The Slovenian Pogačar won the last five editions, and how great it would have been if he’d won this one too and taken the absolute record. After his crash at the Vuelta a España he can’t be there, and I’m sure he’ll pull it off in the future, but doing it consecutively would’ve been so much better. In the last two editions, Remco Evenepoel finished second behind the great Pogi... So just imagine the big opportunity he has this time, and even more so having just won the European title.

      Pero como esto es una carrera de equipos, sinceramente veo mucho más fuertes al equipo UAE, con el amigo Isaac del Toro, que también tiene hambre de campeonar. Si fuese una carrera por selecciones de países, me inclinaría por Remco, pero en esta ocasión, como es por equipo, es indudable que el imponente equipo del UAE tiene grandes ventajas. Pero como siempre decimos, al no estar el esloveno, las puertas están abiertas para cualquiera, sinceramente. Puedo nombrar a muchos que tienen posibilidades, pero me quedo con el fuerte equipo del UAE, donde además de Isaac está ni más ni menos que el último campeón del mundo. O sea, todas las fichas están en ese equipo, pero cualquier cosa puede pasar.

But since this is a team race, I honestly see the UAE team as much stronger, with our friend Isaac del Toro, who’s also hungry to win it. If it were a race between national teams, I’d lean towards Remco, but this time, since it’s by trade teams, there’s no doubt the mighty UAE squad has big advantages. But as we always say, with the Slovenian out, the doors are open for anyone, honestly. I could name a lot of riders with a shot, but I’m sticking with the strong UAE team, where besides Isaac there’s none other than the latest world champion. In other words, all the chips are on that team, but anything can happen.

      No quiero olvidarme de la joven promesa francesa, Paul Seixas, que en el último Mundial no estuvo muy bien, pero ahora sumó descanso y no hay que descartarlo. Le tengo mucha fe al muchacho, sobre todo por su mentalidad de campeón que tiene. No le tiene miedo y, diría, respeto a los grandes del circuito.

I don’t want to forget the young French prospect, Paul Seixas, who didn’t do too well at the last World Championships, but now he’s had some rest and you can’t rule him out. I have a lot of faith in the kid, above all because of that champion’s mindset he has. He’s not afraid of, and I’d even say not in awe of, the big names on the circuit.

      En el rural bike, que es donde me desenvuelvo, cuando no vienen los mejores, como puede ser Locomotora Martínez en mi caso, ya que es de mi categoría, es como que se abre un abanico de posibilidades. Siento que al no estar Pogačar (pese a que se lo extraña), se abre muchas posibilidades para todos, y eso es genial. Imagino a Remco, pensando en esta gran oportunidad. También a Del Toro, representando indirectamente al Pogačar y aumentar su propio palmarés. También a McNulty, intentando demostrar de que no es un campeón casual, y así a todos los chicos con hambre de gloria. Lo que sí estoy seguro es que viviremos un gran espectáculo.

In rural bike, which is where I ride, when the best ones don’t show up, like Locomotora Martínez in my case, since he’s in my category, it’s like a whole range of possibilities opens up.
