Just to get people involved and see who’s actually reading: based on this image—which I think is pretty cool—what would be the first paragraph of an epic story that comes to mind?

The question crossed my mind as a blade scraped across my armor. The impact made me stagger. I drove my sword into the ground to keep from falling, then shoved the creature back with my shoulder. It collapsed into the dust with a howl that was swallowed at once by the din.

All around me, the plain had become a field of ruins. The earth, torn open by battle, still smoked in places. Fires devoured the remains of wagons and banners. In the darkened sky, clouds swirled above us as if trying to hide the world from itself.

I had spent my life fighting demons. More than twenty years hunting their armies, defending villages whose names I sometimes didn’t even know, protecting people who would never see my face. Twenty years believing that every battle brought us closer to peace.

And yet they were still here.

I cut one down, and two more took its place. I broke through their ranks, and they closed in behind me. Their twisted shapes crowded around my last companions. Some were still screaming. Others lay motionless.

I tightened my grip on my sword. My fingers trembled. Was it the cold, the pain, or simply exhaustion? I couldn’t tell. A wound burned along my ribs, and every breath cost me more than the last. My armor, once shining, weighed on my shoulders like a metal tomb.

Age. Fatigue. Despair.

Had they finally caught up with me?

Another wave of demons surged toward us. I raised my weapon, but my arm nearly refused to obey. The blade only made it halfway up. A creature sprang at me, its jaws wide open. I threw myself aside at the last moment. Its claws tore through my cape, ripping away a strip of cloth.

I rolled through the dust, then pushed myself upright with the help of my sword. My vision blurred. The screams blended with the roar of battle, and I could no longer tell my allies from the shadows closing in around us.

I was alone.

Or almost.

A few steps away, a young soldier lay on his back. His helmet had rolled beside him. He couldn’t have been more than seventeen. His eyes were open, fixed on the sky, and his lips moved without making a sound.

I took a step toward him.

A demon blocked my way.

So I struck.

My sword came down on its shoulder and sank deep. The creature howled, but it didn’t fall. It grabbed me by the breastplate and hurled me against a heap of stones. The impact knocked the breath from my lungs.

For a moment, everything went black.

When I opened my eyes, the demon was already leaning over me. I raised my arm to protect myself.

Too slowly.

An arrow pierced the creature’s throat. It stiffened, then collapsed beside me.

“Get up!” a voice shouted from somewhere in the distance. “We’re not done yet!”

I turned my head. Through the smoke, I saw a figure approaching, a bow in hand. I couldn’t make out their face. The wind drove ash toward us, and the fire cast dancing shadows across their armor.

I tried to answer, but no words came.

The figure loosed another arrow. Behind them, the demons stirred, growing more numerous by the moment. They came from the plain, the hills, even the depths of the earth—as if the whole world had opened its gates to let them through.

I leaned on my sword and forced myself to stand. My legs shook. My chest barely rose with each breath.

Still, I held on to my weapon.

Perhaps it was all I had left.

“How many are there?” I finally asked.

The figure didn’t answer right away. They were staring past me, toward the horizon.

So I turned around.

An enormous shape towered among the clouds, so tall that its head vanished into the darkness. The demons parted around it. Even amid the chaos, they seemed to fear whatever had appeared.

My blood ran cold.

For twenty years, I had fought their soldiers, their lieutenants, and their beasts. I had heard of their master in stories whispered around campfires. Some claimed he was nothing but a legend, a tale invented to give fear a face.

But the thing standing before us was real.

It raised one immense hand.

The earth trembled beneath my feet.

And for the first time since the war began, I understood that all the battles I had fought until then might have been nothing more than a prelude.

My final battle had just begun.
